We went to Blue Moon once based upon the absolutely delicious guacamole some of their staff were making fresh at Grove Street market. The restaurant guacamole was nothing like it. Ugh.

Blue Moon Cafe has recently closed, I believe.
It's a pretty big space if I recall the old Baja. I wonder who is going to take over the location.

Unfortunately, how can you expect much more from a chain? I also miss Baja, which I thought was solid Tex Mex (the only one downtown).
Bearbear, Taqueria is a totally different style of food than Blue Moon Cafe, from looking at Blue Moon's menu. Blue Moon seems to be Tex Mex, while Taqueria hugs the line between Cali-Mex and Mexican. It seems that you prefer the latter, which I do as well.

i tried to dine with an open mind (I loved the food, especially the quessadillas, at Baja)...
I decided to ask the waitress, who was very nice, what tasted good. Instead of a recommendation she simply told me that tacos were on the left side of the menu and burritos were on the back... Thank you but I can read. Without a recommendation I decided to order a sample plate that had 2 kinds of tacos... horrible tasting food. the tacos reminded me of when my mom would have an "ortega taco night." what made it even worse was that i paid nearly $6 for one. the quessadila tasted ok but the texture stunk since they didnt press/bake/fry it. My girlfriend ordered a monstrosity of a dish, jungle chicken i think? It consisted of sour mangoes, plantains, avocado, and lime juice thrown on top of a piece of chicken. it tasted like acid, too many overpowering ingredients that were all far from ripe mixed together (poorly). If it was under $10 i wouldnt complain but paying nearly $15 for a piece of crap... unacceptable. And the name? i dont think i even saw coffee on the menu... I cant wait for taqueria to reopen.

Ordered from Blue Moon last night, I was hoping to love it but unfortunately it was meh. It wasn't the worst Mexican I've ever had but it was far from the best. It was disappointing. I feel like I need to go to Taqueria today to make it better, there is no comparing

Stopped in yesterday, suburban vibe at best, mediocre Tex Mex at best. The stale chips should have been a warning.
Good Luck all the same!

When I hear about such huge portions, I go elsewhere. I wish all restaurants would give you the option of a half portion as Marco and Pepe does.

I stopped there this afternoon with my girlfriend. When the chips and salsa arrived, she wasn't too satisfied, since she used to love Baja's. We were both also mildly befuddled by the prices for what seemed to be straight up Tex-Mex, and by the use if jack cheese in everything.
But the entrees we ordered arrived, a quesadilla maya (with steak and cactus), and the veggie burrito, we understood about the pricing. The entrees were largish to huge in portion. My girlfriend's burrito was the size of my forearm. They were also fairly well executed, tasty, and full of fresh ingredients. Each individual ingredient stood out well, and together, as a dish, they blended into more than the sum of their parts. We will both be going back again. My girlfriend is a vegetarian, and had frequently been disappointed with the standard veggie fajitas at Baja, complaining about the plain peppers and onions they sold as a dish. She was more than pleased with her meal today.

Never tried the fish tacos at the old Baja, but from time to time they had a fish platter special (filet of fish with sides), and they were done very well, maybe surprisingly so, but they were good nonetheless. Baja had some tex mex dishes and some dishes that were semi authentic Mexican, as do many "Mexican" restaurants these days.

Actually mendezia is correct. I have not looked at the full menus, but traditionally Tex-Mex is different from Mexican.
Tex-Mex is Americanized Mexican food, kind of like how you have Americanized Chinese food. In Tex-Mex they use chili, cheddar cheese, nachos etc. Most of the time a fish dish from a restaurant that specializes in those dishes would probably not be good and that was true at Baja. I tried a fish taco there years ago and it was probably the worst I ever had. You can get fast food fish tacos that taste way better like at Rubio's, Wahoo's etc.

Not sure if you've ever looked at a map in your life, so here's a helpful hint
See that blue surrounding Mexico? That's ocean. Fish are in the ocean. Quote:

I do, and yes, seriously. Have you ever been to Mexico? Seafood is a big part of coastal Mexican cuisine, and since Baja had nice fish dishes, I ordered them there.

We've had Blue Moon twice so far since it's opened in JC (we have been to the Bergen County location before). It's very good! We ate once in the restaurant on a Friday night and everything was great and then we ordered delivery last night. The food arrived in less than a half hour--very impressive.
Everything is great, just a bit expensive. Highly recommend!

Blue Moon is open now. Similar look to Baja, but a bit more warm and brighter inside. Had dinner there last night with my wife. It was Ladies night so she was enjoying the $5 house margaritas. Food was yummy (and much better than Baja in our opinion...we would only ever go to Baja for drinks as we were never impressed with their food). Our waitress was super friendly as well. The owner came over and chatted for a bit and recommended an awesome desert...the Chimmichanga Cheesecake. Man was it delicious! Overall a nice experience!

Looks more like Tex Mex than Mexican, which is what Baja was as well. Kind of sucks, because I liked Baja's fish selection and it looks like Blue Moon doesn't have much in that department.
