I went the other day. This place has a nice selection. They also, sell groceries, fresh live fish, and a host of prepared foods. I saw Chinese dumplings and buns. The layout is clean and simple with room for more products.....if they do well. My favorite find was Korean Ramen....which are freaking yummy...as long as you add a host of fresh veggies they end up being a bit healthier.........i now don't have to take the long public transit trip to Edgewater to stock up on them. All though this place can't compare to KMAN or Mitsuwa. It is a good start. They are open every day from 8 to 9 pm. And no, I do not work for them or have any relation to them.

OK I just got there. 15 minutes' drive. Looks good though it's smaller than 555. Parking lot won't be ready until about next week, but street parking is easy to find and cheap (30 min per quarter). I hope they get a lot of customers so I don't need to go to 555, Kam Man or Chinatown.

+1 for Kam Man. They also sell great milk teas by the counter.

I went to the Kan Man in East Hanover and was very impressed. It has a butcher, fish and vegetable department in addition to an exceptional selection of canned, frozen and refrigerated goods. They also have a cafeteria, so lunch is a good time to go.
Unlike a lot of places I go to in Chinatown, everyone spoke English. The place is off the north side of Route 10, somewhat hidden by Wesco furniture.

Just thought I would let you all know. A new Asian grocery market just opened this week in Bayonne. I plan on checking it out tomorrow. It's about 4 or 5 blocks from Hudson Bayonne Lanes bowling alley/Fine Fair Supermarket. Feida Asian Market 1033 Broadway, Bayonne, NJ 07002

At 555 the prices are good but the selection can be limited for grocery items, the fresh veggies and fruits are good and well priced, the prepared food counter stopped selling their baked Baos which I liked. I'll have to try both Kam Man stores.

I haven' t been to the one in East Hanover, but the one in Edison is pretty big and offers pretty much everything. It's right off of route 1 and I take NJ Tpk to get there...it might be easier to go to the one in Edison, but I just prefer to go south from JC vs. travelling west.

sorry... never been to the one in Edison. I wouldn't know.
This one did expand a couple of years ago to include the gift shop next to it, so now it offers basically everything.....

This must be the same 555 Fish Market that is trying to open on Central Ave. in the Heights right across the street from Stop & Shop. I spoke to the Central Ave. Business Association they stated that the reason for the delayed opening was mainly the City of Jersey City giving them problems. It should have been opened already and they are not sure when that will be.

Sounds like besides the two places on Newark that sells Thai groceries, there's nothing in Jersey City? I really missed the Hong Kong Supermarket when it was here (now occupid by Target). May not be the best, but they had tons of stuff!!!
Thanks for all the info so far! Can someone provide the address for Kam Man in Edison?

For non-perishables and tea, I go to Kam Man at 200 Canal Street. A lot of Chinese cookbooks have lists of ingredients in their opening pages - I copied one that had the Chinese characters and take it with me when I shop. I show it to employees if I can't find something or (try to) match it up with the signs in vegetable stores. This makes Chinatown less inscrutable.
For cooked meats I like Big Wong on Mott. If the Board of Health issued a "Z" for hygiene they would probably get it, but the stuff is delicious, and I love the name. Alas, they no longer sell tee-shirts. I also usually go to Golden Steamer (on Mott above Canal - west side) for bao, but have lately been getting them from Nom Wah on Doyers. I do not like their dim sum or the atmosphere. In cool weather, always on my way home, I go to Tasty Dumplings at 54 Mulberry for a bags of frozen dumplings. The dumplings are delicious and as far as I can figure this is the closest place to the PATH if you are concerned about defrosting. I never buy raw meat or fish in Chinatown, but maybe some day. I also never shop in Chinatown on the weekends.

I prefer China Town NYC, but would love to know more details about the store opening in Bayonne. 555 is not that bad, but its not great!

555 is OK but not great. They have produce and meat but the grocery selection is pretty sparse.
I prefer driving down to Edison to Kam Man.

There are two Vietnamese grocey stores opposite one another on Newark Avenue. One is next door to the Vietnamese restaurant.
They sell various kinds of choi, and a few other Chinese bits and pieces. Robin.

You'll need a car, but you may want to check out the 555 Chinese Supermarket on 1&9
