Honshu's great, and easy for takeout.

With all the Honshu picks, I went tonight and it was really good. Shared a Sushi Gold and Spicy Miso Ramen to get a sense of the place. Can't wait for a return bout.

Good thread and thanks for the suggestions. Mitsuwa is great fun and I have been going there since it opened as Yaohan. The schlep up to Edgewater, though, means it's a very occasional visit for me, to get groceries, good sake, and a treat for the day. But I have not been very impressed by the cooked food, although authentic enough.

I don't expect ba-sashi, but I would really love to find a good chawanmushi.

And while it may not be A-list, let me put in a good word for the neighborhood character of Sushi Tango, whose Mango Monkey has never disappointed - a genius American sushi creation.

Teppan is about as authentic as a turkey and swiss sandwich at a kosher deli

Definitely Honshu!! Huge thumbs up for them. Great sushi, sashimi, and noodles. And, as someone else mentioned, it is BYOB. The staff is ALWAYS courteous and service is efficient and done with a smile.

There really are only 2 choices, Honshu and Komegashi. I go to Honshu for raw (sashimi, suhi) and Komegashi for cooked (katsu, curry).

For delivery I order from Illuzion in Hoboken. The sushi and sashimi are consistently fresh and cut generously.

I have eaten at Honshu and Komegashi, and I think both places are very good (I tried Sushi Tango and JC Sakura a long time ago, but I wasn't impressed).

As for other Japanese food, which there are many different kinds, what you see at Mitsuwa (restaurants and some lunch boxes) are authentic...though not all of them are good.

For those who want to experience Japan, Mitsuwa is a great place (I go there almost every week). From the time you enter their parking space, you are practically in Japan.

I like Komegashi too, very fresh and well prepared but for a more authentic experience go to Misuwa.

Hi I'm Japanese, and I want to comment just for your entertainment.

Most sushi that you see at Japanese restaurant is not really Japanese. They were invented in America (by who? I don't know).

This is what authentic sushi looks like.

Now don't get me wrong. I LOVE sushi invented in America. And I think whoever invented them are brilliant.

But in the same way pizza in America is very different from pizza in Italy, sushi in America is very different from sushi in Japan. There is nothing wrong with that though.

I have eaten at Honshu and Komegashi, and I think both places are very good (I tried Sushi Tango and JC Sakura a long time ago, but I wasn't impressed).

You won't find authentic Japanese food here in Jersey City. You should go to Mitsuwa in Edgewater if you want authentic Japanese food. Here, the closest thing to Japanese food is sushi made by the Chinese, and Honshu Lounge is the best if that's what you want to eat.

I also completely agree Honshu is the best in JC. And the best part...it's BYOB.

Others may prefer Komegashi I or II. My favorite is Honshu, on Montgomery Street. And the Honshu roll is the best!

What are your recommendations for good Japanese food without going across the river?

Obviously that means great sushi, but other Japanese cuisine, too. What's the best, what's the best value, who does good takeout? Anybody open late?

Thanks in advance.
