Chinatown is probably easier to get to than Bayonne or Union City...

Yes, I am short. Even petite pants tend to be an inch or two past acceptable. When I was in NoHo, I would walk down to Chinatown where a number of places did this for $5 a pair. I would love to pay under $10 a pair somewhere in the JC vicinity...would go to Bayonne or Union City for a bargain. I have six draggy pairs, so saving money is important.

DeCarlos Bespoke on Monmouth. He's the real deal. If it's a simple job like pant hemming you can go to the dry cleaner on Washington Street in paulus hook; they also do good work. Just wouldn't take anything involved to them...

Can anyone recommend a good tailor for Men's suits in Jersey City? Thanks.

having used both tailor's touch and decarlo's, my vote is with decarlo, with a few caveats.
1. if he says one week, that means at least 10 days. 2. during the summer, one week may actually be two weeks. 3. he overprices small alterations that he doesn't want to do (there is nothing wrong with that), BUT 1. the quality of his work is outstanding. 2. i have bought in several cheap suits that were one size too big. in each case, he was able to cut the suit down to size and shape it quite elegantly. 3. he ropes the arms (and does it by hand). 4. he can recut suit arms to make the button holes operable, which is not a simple feat 5. he has recut pleated pants to nom-pleated. 6. the quality of his work is outstanding. Small alterations are not his strengths, but they pay his bills ...

I think at Alterations to Go it depends on what sort of look you're going for. My boyfriend has had a few suits tailored there (pants hemmed, sleeves shortened) and says the quality of the work is good. But, you have to be kind of pushy/specific about how you want things done (especially if you want a more fitted/tailored/modern look). Otherwise, they're professional and consistent.

Thanks Ahal. Alterations to Go has pretty good reviews on Yelp too. I think my suit needs to be brought in at least 2 ways: shoulders, and sleeves narrowed. Anybody have experience at Alterations to Go for getting a men's suit tailored?

I get everything done at Alterations to Go on Washington near Sussex. Michelle is great. It is usually just pants hemmed, and the waist adjusted, but my girlfriend goes there for practically everything she needs mended/adjusted/whatever.

Hey JClisters,
So DeCarlos is my main man for most of my alterations, but he is booked for at least 4 weeks, and I'm trying to get a suit tailored for a wedding in 2 weeks. I don't know if I trust Daniel to tailor a nice suit. Should I? I bring my pants to him to be hemmed (in fact I am picking up 3 pairs from Daniel tomorrow). Not sure that he is good for anything other than simple alterations...a suit requires a really good eye and lots of attention to detail. I need a tailor who has DeCarlos' attention to detail, but is not backed up for more than 2 weeks. I have read this thread, but not sure if any of the tailors mentioned fit this description. Is Tailor's Touch trustworthy, or more of a quick in and out, hemmed pants kind of place?

To be fair, Decarlos' focus is bespoke tailoring. I consider it a favor when he takes smaller jobs.
That said, be sure to be flexible with your time frame.

Definitely leave DeCarlos at least a two week window. Speaking from experience (and without getting into detail), you don't want to be left without your suit when you need it most.

Decarlos is the absolute best in town but that comes with a price.
If you want fast and cheap go to Danny on Grove, next to Ibbys. I use him for simple jobs such as hems or to shorten sleeves. One thing I've noticed about him over the years is he tends to err on the long side of the jobs, so if you really want "no break" or want to show some cuff, make sure you are explicit in your instructions. To his defense, I don't blame him for giving himself a cushion lest someone say something is too short.

Another vote for DeCarlos here. Agreed though, he is not cheap but you really get what you pay for.
Just so you have an idea, I usually pay around $200 for alterations that include hemming on the pant legs and waist, and bringing in the suit jacket in several spots (shoulders and back). These suits are by far the best I own and fit my body better than anything I have ever worn. DeCarlos is also excellent for recommending accessories such as the proper style of belt, tie, and shoes to go along with your outfit. Oh, and just to share an anecdote: Last time I went in to get measured for a suit, the guy in front of me took about 10-15 minutes getting the same measurements done. When it was time to pay, he balked at the cost and walked out with his suit. So it's probably important to know what you're getting into ahead of time. Also, expect about four weeks for the work to be complete. Again, all that being said, DeCarlos Bespoke is one of the premier small businesses in town. http://www.decarlosbespoke.com/

I've been to DeCarlos a couple of times and they do a great job. If you tell them that you're not in a rush, they can take FOREVER though, so you might want to give them a hard deadline if you need it for a specific event. Also, they require payment up front....not sure if this policy has changed since I was last there.
They really do a great job though....

Taylor's Touch on 6th Brunswick does a great job. I've used them for several years for a variety of alterations.

I 2nd DeCarlos. Best in town. A bit pricier than usual but if you have a good suit, it's worth every penny. The guy knows what he's doing and very courteous to his customers. He'll take his time measuring your suit to your body. I've went to places where they'll measure you in less than a minute. This guy takes his time to make sure it's right.
Good luck.

Decarlo is the best in town. They are not cheap. They run a first class operation and their services are worth every penny. I had the suit I was married in tailored by Decarlo and have been using them ever since. You can now end your search and celebrate with a nice breakfast sandwich.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best place to get alterations/tailoring on a men's suit? I saw this place DeCarlos on Monmouth St and it got good reviews online. Anyone ever been or knows somewhere else?

+1 to Italmoda. I needed a suit slightly altered (jacket sleeves and pant length). I took it to DeCarlos in Jersey City. Great service and great location; reminiscent of a nice boutique in NYC. However, he was backed up and I wouldn't have my suit back in over a week, and the prices were fairly high. I searched on yelp and found Italmoda, and took my suit there. Her locale is exactly the opposite; small, dingy place, but her work was excellent, quick, and cheaper than DeCarlos. She was also a very nice lady and I would definitely use her services again in the future. (note: if you drive there, make sure to double and triple check the parking signs. I've lived in the area my whole life, including in Hoboken for 4 years, and I still managed to somehow park my car on the "resident only - will boot" side of the street. Luckily I noticed my mistake and quickly moved the car )

I actually went to this place. The lady who works there is very knowledgeable. We'll see how her craftsmanship is but I think it'll be fine.

His focus is bespoke tailoring so I would say it depends on what jobs he has at any given time. Best bet is to stop in and just ask.

DeCarlos is awesome, but for dress altering I go to Domineco on Willow Street in Hoboken. (201) 659-7882 he's not cheap, either, but he's pretty fast, and he'll make that off-the-rack dress look like couture.
for quick stuff (hems, minor alterations) the woman at Star Cleaners at the corner of Newark and Coles is really good.

Second for DeCarlos. Not cheap and not fast but very very good. DeCarlos will make you suit fit perfect.
If you need fast and affordable, go to Daniel on Grove. He does a good job with the basics.

i got a suit tailored at decarols on monmouth a while back. they did a fantastic job and made my suit look a lot more expensive then what I actually paid for. It did end up taking a lot longer than expected, so if you are in a rush, maybe look elsewhere.
you should note that they expect full payment up front (they did when I went a year ago anyway), and it's not cheap. But every guy should have one good fitting suit in their closet and they did a really good job, so you shouldn't let the price dissuade you too much.

I dont see why DeCarlos wouldn't work on a tux.
Give this # a try 201-216-0770 I believe it is an updated number.
