Meanwhile, my dog hadn't even noticed them and was looking everywhere but at the geese. They are NOT friendly at all!

Traditional geese breeding grounds are in Canada. These geese though have lost their desire to migrate and now live 24/7 in pretty much the same place. Urbanization has given them an all-year food source and have adapted to living in urban / semi-urban environments. For example, golf courses, with their well manicured lawns, provide an ample food source for geese.

The geese have probably been returning to these spots since before people showed up. It is encoded in their DNA to return to their birthplace and they have been doing so for generations. Maybe some of you need to check your "ewww they're dirty" mentality at the door. It's amazing the way I see people raising their kids around here. I walk past toddlers with my dogs and kids get this look on their face that is a vivid reflection of their parents neurosis. Go bath in purell.

Ahh let's not be cruel to animals. I am sure there are better ways to keep goose/geese from being a nuisance.

I went to A&P and saw a flock of geese crossing the street into the parking lot. It struck me as really odd, good to see it wasn't just me.

NJ has a generous Canada Goose hunting policy. There are 2 seasons that are 30 days long. For the winter one, the bag limit is 30 birds per day. Fall is 15 per day. Start buying shotgins.

i know one method of controlling the population is to have people go to their nests and give their eggs a good shake, which destroys the embryo. I remember this being done around a reservoir. The crap from the birds was so much it was contaminating the water.

Has anyone else noticed a significant increase in the geese population in the waterfront areas of Jersey City (Newport, Paulus Hook)? I've seen a lot of adult geese with babies all over the place. This morning they were down near The Pier apartments by Exchange Place. There's poop ALL over!
