Ok I too smelled the smell around 8:30 pm on Thursday like the above poster. I was at the Kmart on rt 440. The smell lasted about a half hour. Like I said in an above post it smells like Chorine / insecticide. A friend I was with said it smelled like a Sharpie marker.
Since the smell is new at least to me I wonder if it could have anything to do with the new Hess Bayonne Power plant that is about to go live. Seems they are doing some prep work now. It is at the end of Bayonne. Put Constable Hook, Bayonne, New Jersey in Google map. Long shot but you never know. Bayonne gas-fueled power plant is on schedule for summer opening Published: Thursday, May 24, 2012, 10:05 AM Updated: Thursday, May 24, 2012, 10:06 AM By Andrew Steadman/The Jersey Journal BAYONNE ? Officials say it?s almost time to fire up the Bayonne Energy Center, the natural gas-fueled power plant being built on Constable Hook. The power plant, a joint venture between Hess Corporation and an affiliate of ArcLight Capital Partners, LLC, is on schedule for a summer opening. The $400 million, 10,800-square-foot, 512-kilowatt facility will serve New York City?s power needs without taxing the energy grid in New Jersey. A spokeswoman for the project said construction of the facility will finish on target. According to Bayonne Energy Center promotional material, 512 kilowatts is enough to power 500,000 homes. The facility?s eight Rolls Royce gas-fired turbines only take 10 minutes to power up and shut down, meaning the facility will be able to cycle on and off as needed, reducing fuel costs and emissions. Commissioning activities will also include the electrical and electronic testing of control systems and the start-up of mechanical systems, such as turbines, compressors and pumps.

I live around VVP, and is smelling this "wonderful" smell right now.
I've lived here about 5 years now, and how come I've never smelt it before (perhaps I just never noticed?) At a minimum, I don't remember smelling like tihs for consecutive days like this time.

You don?t have to be rich or educated ..just organized.
Like I posted in the past when the first home owners started to move into the Society Hill I development they had to deal with a really foul odor. It turns out the smell was from a Tallow meat rending plant across Newark Bay in Newark. Smell from across the bay ? There was a tallow rendering plant across the bay years ago. Look it up if you don?t know what it is? quite foul. (here?s a hint did you ever see those garbage trucks with pieces of meat and fat hanging off the back? Get stuck in traffic behind one of those beauties on a hot day..PU) On hot summer days/nights the smell was smelly to say the least. The newly forming SH Assoc. jumped on it. Working with the city and DEP a plan was hatched. If you smelled the smell you were to call a number to report it. Inspectors would come out and do readings. That worked for a while but the Tallow boys wised up and started letting it loose mostly at night. Nothing could be done at night by the DEP. So the DEP set up a special hotline number to call at night so at least the incidents would be logged. Long story short the Tallow company started to incur big time fines every time someone smelled that smell. The smell eventually disappeared. They either went out of business or were forced to install anti-stink devices. I just don?t understand how the people in Country Village put up with that smell all those years before SH came along. So like the above posters have stated everyone should call when the smell is smelled. PS ? I have been smelling more of a Chorine/ Insecticide smell all over JC lately especially over by JScare .. not electrical to me.

Winds were out of the north and northwest this morning at 3-10 mph per hour. If the Wheldon plant is the source, that would put any plume that is released at the site drifting towards the Pulaski Skyway around Raymond Boulevard at that time.

I have yet to smell anything pungent downtown, but this morning around 8:30am I caught a whiff of the electrical stink while leaving the Pulaski Skyway southbound near Raymond Blvd into Newark.
However, it didn't last long as a little further south the odor was replaced by the pleasant aroma of fresh-baked bread. There must be a large bakery near the Wilson Ave exit on 1/9, because many mornings it smells like cinnamon buns.

Over the last couple of days, on and off, I have noticed what seems to be an odor similar to an electrical fire. I haven't taken much note of it. As I was driving along I-280 today, I detected the same smell near the the Weldon Materials Plant in Harrison/Kearny. This would require a WNW wind. It could be coincidence, or it could be the same thing.
Over the last 5 days this is when the wind has been blowing out of the W or NW recorded at the LSC and Harrison (C1099/HSNN4) weather stations May 26 LSC 11 AM W 8 mph Harrison 8 AM W 3 mph 10-11 AM W 3-6 mph 4PM-5PM W 3-7 mph 8 PM W 1mph 10 PM W 3 mph May 27 LSC No occurrence Harrison 6AM-7AM W, NW 1-2 mph 3 PM W 3mph May 28 LSC 6AM-8AM NW 1-4 mph Harrison 7AM-9AM W, NW 1-3 mph 12PM NW 1 mph May 29 LSC 7AM-9AM W, NW 1-8 mph 11 PM NW 4 mph Harrison 7AM W 3 mph 3 PM W 3 mph 5 PM W 6 mph 7PM-8PM W, NW 8 mph 10PM-11PM NW, W 1-3 mph May 30 LSC 12AM NW 2 mph 5 AM W 1 mph 8AM-10AM W, NW 1-2 mph Harrison 3AM-6AM W 1-4 mph 7PM W 2 mph I suggest that if you do smell whatever odor it is, note the time and direction of the wind.

I felt a weird burning sensation in my nose and throat last night, too. Around midnight. I thought I was getting sick or something.
Between these unknown and potentially toxic clouds, the coming gas transmission line and the already bad air, I'm beginning to second guess my choice to live here. This is nasty.

I've lived here for 6 years and have never smelled this before, until this past Saturday, and this morning. To my nostrils, it smells like something burning, but not something natural that's burning.
How can we figure out where it's coming from, why it is new as of a few days ago, and if it's harmful to our health or not?

I posted above about the smell following the rainstorm. After I posted at 9:30 the smell came through in waves for the rest of the night and this morning I was awoken by the smell at 6:00 A.M. This is unacceptable. I can't say where it is coming from- others pinpoint the recycling company- I can say that I never smelled it before and that the smell was so strong I felt my health was being compromised. I live across from a middle school and all those kids are going to be breathing it too and this is not acceptable. I called the Department of Environmental Protection number 1-877-927-6339 to report the smell. The guy I spoke with said the nobody else had called about the smell. If YOU smell the chemical I urge you to call the number and report it to the D.E.P. and get the ball rolling as I doubt they will put much weight behind my one phone call. If they get dozens of calls maybe something will get done about it.

The smell is still in the VVP areas this morning. I encourage anyone who cares about the air they breath to contact Ward F councilwoman Michelle Massey to complain/inquire as to what is being done to end this pollution.
Hugo Neu Recycling is in her Ward and as noted above, is politically connected to our esteemed Mayor Healy. Michelle's phone is 201 547 5338 and her email is mmassey@jcnj.org

VVP area has it tonight also. This is a first in 5 years over here and completely unacceptable.
This sort of negative externality is tough to resolve, but I think everyone reading this should email/call their councilperson to complain and ask what can be done. I cannot imagine that this is in any way healthy to be breathing....

Another very strong waft of that smell tonight over by Journal Square. I'm writing this Tuesday the 29th at 9:30. A rain storm just passed through and right behind it is that very strong chemical smell. I sure hope our elected representatives are taking note and will soon take steps to address the situation. This chemical smell is a new thing for this area. I have caught a wiff of it a few times in the last week but have never smelled it before and DO NOT wish to continue smelling it. Its very unpleasant.

The Hugo Neu Corp. contributed $25,000 to Healy et al in the last election cycle. The founder is a major (scroll down to number 20) state and national political contributor. I suspect the Hugo Neu Corp. has bought the right to burn and release whatever they wish.

It can be moved. From what I have seen over the years, we just need less poor people and more wealthy people in the town to have a significant influence on any issue, whether its a gas pipeline or an industrial plant.

The prevailing wind is from the east. It blows the Hugo Neu emissions into Greenville, sparing Port Liberte (for the most part). But yeah, when on rare occasions it blows north, it can suck. I don't think Hugo Neu can be moved.

Just remembering when I used to bike up Port Liberte and was astonished that people paying enormous sums to live in a gated community would tolerate the enormous stink from the recycling plant right next door ... how is this not a health/quality of life problem for the residents? Is there any action to try to move this operation elsewhere?

My comment "It's JC get used to it" was made tongue-in-cheek. Kind of. Hugo Neu in Greenville releases so many toxins into the air that it's not even funny. Every single day when I drive west to Exit 14B I smell their toxins. Smells electrical, too, a weird metallic smell. But I would not hold much hope that our government will do anything to stop it. So going back to my original comment - if you don't want to breathe it, move. Seriously.

Use 1-877-WARN-DEP instead. They'll route the call to the local health inspector's office.

no see i dont have to live with it. i just read a report from california that these industries are unregulated and release dangerous toxins into the air. i dont know about New Jersey but I will look into it. they take old air conditioners and refrigerators and engine blocks apart and release toxic freon and other dangerous chemicals into the air. these dangerous metals and chemicals accumulate in our bodies and never leave.
I've never smelled anything like that before and I knew it came from metals or something electric burning. here's the article i read http://www.gcmonitor.org/article.php?id=1079
