The Thistle is just down the road technically in Lyndhurst. They might have previously been in Kearny. They also do catered indoor and outdoor events where they bring the fryers to you. Not expensive either - down to $8.50 a head depending on how many people you have. Delicious.

Hi HPYC. No worries about not being familiar with doubles. They are the West Indies take on a traditional Indian/Pakistani dish called Channa(spicy chickpea stew) and Puri(fried, crispy, but still soft bread disk). The meal on the subcontinent is usually eaten as a hearty breakfast or quick meal at restaurants or food stalls.
From what friends tell me. The West Indies take on it is slightly milder spice(pepper sauce anyone) profile and the addition of different chutneys composed of ingredients that are native to the West Indies as opposed to the subcontinent. In my opinion, the twist i like best that came from the West Indies is that they take two pieces of puri and put the channa in between making for a great portable sandwich. Take this more as an indication of my ignorance than a criticism of cuisine, but what the heck is a "double."

I already told you where the doubles are in the "What does Jersey City need in an new restaurant" thread. I do not want to have to repeat myself. Thank you.

Really good fish at the Argyle, that makes up from a few minuses - biggest of which is that their fryers badly need a cleaning to remove the caked-in grease and dirt. And remember to add you own salt to the Argyle's fish and fries... Best Fish and Chips in JC for me is at the Light Horse Tavern.

Argyle is good. So is the Thistle, in Lyndhurst. If JC gets a fish n chips place that holds a candle remotely near those two, I'll definitely try it.

It is mostly fish with carib flavor, so it is not one or the other, however, the fries are just average fries, nothing to write home about, but the cole slaw was definitely good and I rarely eat cole slaw bc I don't usually like it. No doubles, but that would be good. I like the doubles I get on 43 and 6 Ave at the Trini-Paki Boys cart..for 1 dollar, their doubles rock.

is it caribbean food or is it fish n chips? Argyle in Kearny is amazing fish n chips. Columbus and Jersey is great caribbean despite the freaking car running into their business recently.
But I won't mix the two. Is it fish and chips? Is it caribbean? I gotta know man!

Been open for about 3 weeks. They have interesting carib specials every day, except Monday (closed). Very small place with maybe seating for 6. Super friendly. Provided free corn on the cob. They have that nice spicy carib sauce. Specialize in fish, tilapia, shrimp, catfish, whiting, etc. Started with a beef pattie. It was really good. Not made there, she gets them from a bakery. But everything else is made there. Had the spicy red snaper (whole fish, bones, head, etc..) with fries and cole slaw. It was good stuff. 308 Pacific Avenue 07304. Found it by just exploring the area near the Provident Bank, Lafayette Park, etc.. ..they need a FB or basic web page though.
