We were looking toward the Hudson River when we heard the roar of engines, but had to whip around and look back west to see it flying over PAD, not the Hudson. Amazing! Caught some great photos during the second fly-by, I must credit Mr. Jeff Moore.

the first flyover was over the Hudson, then it came down right over Newport, then back up again further inland.

the pilot got an eyeful of Jersey.

Watched Enterprise fly by from the walkway next to the RR terminal by the NJ 9/11 memorial. Everyone was a little disappointed that it flew over inland instead of over the river, but it was still an awe-inspiring sight.

Funny, because I probably would have had a better view from my rooftop in downtown JC!

There is live video on FOX right now, and the 747 is still taxing on the runway. They also showed the flight path, and it will be heading north up toward the Verrazano first, and then back south to loop past the Statue of Liberty. So I agree, it should probably be going past LSP closer to 10:30.

See you guys there!

(Friday JJ 4/27)

This morning's flyover by shuttle Enterprise attached to 747 should be visible all along Hudson County waterfront

Published: Friday, April 27, 2012, 3:00 AM
By Travis Fedschun/The Jersey Journal

The third time may be the charm for the final flight of the space shuttle Enterprise.

After canceling twice this week due to weather conditions, NASA announced yesterday it plans to go ahead this morning with the final flight of the space shuttle Enterprise attached to a 747 shuttle carrier aircraft.

While the exact flight route isn?t known because of weather and operational issues, the agency has said a low-level flight will occur near several landmarks.

Spectators along the Hudson County waterfront will be able to see the flight before the plane lands at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The flyover is planned between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. The Intrepid Air, Sea, and Space Museum has posted on its website that the flight should be visible after 10 a.m.

Prime viewing spots will be available at most any location along the Hudson River below the George Washington Bridge.

Liberty State Park in Jersey City as well as Pier A, Pier C, and Maxwell Place Park in Hoboken should all afford a glimpse of the shuttle atop the 747 near the Intrepid and the Statue of Liberty.

The weather is expected to cooperate for the flight. The National Weather Service is forecasting clear, sunny skies this morning Temperatures are expected to be in the 50s with breezy conditions.

After the shuttle is taken off the 747, it will be placed on a barge and transported up the Hudson River in June, once again giving those near the water an opportunity to get a glimpse.

JJ piece?.

The flight tomorrow is a "go" as of now, but I am not holding my breath because it is supposed to be windy.

We'll see.

Please post if you hear something.

You mean being capable of tossing away billions on unreliable, inefficient, dangerous vehicles? I think we can still do that.

The shuttle is a fascinating thing?it is a spacecraft after all?but it was a lemon. It was too complicated, too expensive to be practical, too susceptible to catastrophic single-point-of-failure modes, and as reusable as a diaper. It should have been retired from service long ago so that better technology could have been put into place. I admit feeling a bit misty during Atlantis? final landing, but I?m not immune to schmaltz, and I have a lot of admiration for the men and women who were brave enough to ride that jalopy into space.

As much as I would like to disagree with that (a bit cynical)statement, I cannot.

Folks shed tears and choked up in DC watching the flyover.

I think they cried for what ianmac wrote, perhaps not even realizing it.

Update: Managers Tentatively Target Friday, April 27 for Enterprise Ferry Flight

04.24.12 WASHINGTON -- NASA managers, in coordination with Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum officials, tentatively are targeting Friday, April 27, for the ferry of space shuttle Enterprise from Washington Dulles International Airport to John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York.

Managers shifted the flight from Wednesday to Friday because of a large region of low pressure dominating the East Coast. The weather is predicted to be more favorable Friday.

NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with Enterprise mounted atop will fly at a relatively low altitude over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area on Friday. The aircraft is expected to fly near a variety of landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty and Intreprid. After the flyover is complete, the SCA will land at JFK.

The Federal Aviation Administration is coordinating the flight, which is scheduled to occur between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. EDT, weather permitting. The exact route and timing depend on weather and operational constraints.

Several weeks following the arrival, Enterprise will be "demated" from the 747 and placed on a barge that will be moved by tugboat up the Hudson River to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in June. The shuttle will be lifted by crane and placed on the flight deck of the Intrepid where it will be on exhibit to the public starting this summer in a temporary climate-controlled pavilion. The Intrepid continues work on a permanent exhibit facility to showcase Enterprise that will enhance the museum's space-related exhibits and education curriculum.
