Household trash is pretty bad, but look at this! Oct 27, 2010: York and Barrow

Look back to my posts #9 and #10 in this thread. I think Fulop's office has the ability to get these cans back; he is the one who requested they be removed.

There used to be more cans, but some of the more selfish/lazy/ignorant citizens of downtown JC were using them to toss their household trash. Rather than increase the frequency of emptying the cans, the city (selfishly/lazily) opted to remove them.

Wish we could have nice(r) things...

There is a lack of them in Jersey City, not just any particular street. And you may not even want one. They recently put one near my building and its only collected every so often, meanwhile the trash overflows to the ground.

I wrote a letter and sent two e-mails to Fulop's office about this months ago and never got a response. I know of four trash cans that have been removed in my neighborhood (Hamilton Park) within the past 6 months. None had been hit by cars and two were relatively new. The supposed reason for this is that they were encouraging illegal dumping of household waste and construction debris. I think that punishing the law-abiding public for the actions of a few offenders by removing the cans is nothing short of brilliant. In the spirit of this, let's call for a measure to make owning cars illegal for everyone because some people run red lights. That could then be followed by shutting down all retail establishments, everywhere, because there are some people who shoplift.

I will contact NID and Mayor's office (thank you, heights, for the info) but seriously, why does one have to waste time fighting for what should be the basic right of urban taxpayers to have trash pails nearby? As dog owners, exactly WHAT are we supposed to do with the dog waste we are required by law to pick up? Last week I carried two large bags of poop six blocks before dumping them in a private trash can for sheer disgust.

Enough already, just put them back.

I wouldn't want anyone's dog waste in my garbage can,
The PATH eliminated garbage cans long ago in their stations so what ever you bring with you you should take with you.
Call the NID and speak to your NID rep in your area. Have a follow up on what is being done to replace those trash cans. The NID will probably write a work order to the DPW to have one installed. Keep tabs on the paper trail.

I did email Fulop regarding the missing trash cans on Jersey Avenue and I received this response in August 2009:

The cans have not been replaced still. I saw a 'responsible' dog owner pick up after their dog the other day and dispose of the bag in the sewer on Jersey and Fifth!

Please bring back the trash cans!

They removed the municipal trash cans from at least four locations on one day:
Jersey and 3rd
Jersey and 4th
Jersey and 5th (there were two cans cross-corner)
Jersey and 6th

I did email Fulop, like suggested above, but i think he's been pretty busy these last few days

I've been here 10 years.

The garbage cans are not replaced when they get hit by cars. Sometimes this throws the can a few feet and people use the (now destroyed) can in its new location, but the JCIA only empties it if it's in the old location. Funny, eh.

Some destroyed garbage cans have laid on their side for months before being removed (9th and Marin several years ago).

I've seen at least 5 garbage cans go because of obvious traffic incidents, and several more go due to bizarre reasons. This is just on blocks I walk regularly.

The city needs a policy of tracking where the garbage cans are and replacing them if they are destroyed.

Fulop might be able to help. Contacting him is a good idea.

If you want something done in Jersey City you have to be persistant. If you give up easily OR just hold your breath then, it's true, odds are it won't happen. But if you really want something like a garbage can added on your block then you better be ready to make multiple phone calls and e-mails following up on the matter. Persistance will win out at the end of the day...don't give in! Thanks.

Contact your NID rep (201) 547-5683, or the Mayor's Office (201) 547-4900. The NID can create a work order/paper trail to the DPW to install one. If one can't be installed then the NID should give you an answer as to why so the matter can be considered closed. Keep a log.

Does anyone know what happened to the trash cans that were along Jersey Avenue? They are gone today and a small pile of "doggie bags" is forming where a trash can once stood.

Does anyone know who I can contact to request for a municipal trash can to be placed on the corner of my block?
