I got lunch there this afternoon, and I agree that the wait was a bit too long, but also realize that they've just opened and have some kinks to work out. I'm sure they'll have things streamlined in no time.

As for the food, I thought it was pretty tasty. The casing got a little wet from steaming, but a few minutes in the frying pan took care of that.

Just went there. Prepare to wait a LONG time. The dumplings are ok. They are very doughy. The fried ones I got were burned, and when they put them int he styrofoam, it actually melted the styrofoam container. For $2.75, you get 5 dumplings which isn't bad, but it is mostly dough. I'll go back to try the other dishes.

The dumplings (chicken and chive) are good!

Although the folks that run it still needs to get their act together - went there for lunch and they were swamped and obviously haven't got their roles and routines down (everyone was everywhere).

According to the owner, he gets his dumplings from his uncle who owns Tasty Dumpling in Chinatown (54 Mulberry St).

Will definitely go again!

Do they sell any frozen dumplings that can be prepared at home?

It's a small place. There is no indoor seating. They only have outdoor seating in the backyard. They plan to get a tent.

The owners said they would be open 'soon'.
Saw the menu on the wall. This is not 'just another' Chinese take-out joint; it's a chinatown-type noodle and dumpling joint.

They have a sweet patio in the back for when the weather gets warm again.

Their menu isn't the typical trifold job with 100+ items.

They will have dumplings (duh), soup noodles for ~ $5, and other noodle dishes.

The only question is if the food will be any good. There will be only one way to find out...

I just walked by it and it had an "OPEN" sign lit up in the window. I was across the street though, so I'm not 100% sure if the doors were actually open for customers.

Sign says open, but it isn't. I peeked in and it was a mess in there. Looks like it'll still be a while.

I notice the "Ducky's and Dumplings" sign is no longer on the storefront. Does this mean they're no longer opening?

Hope they open up because I love dumplings. I know from this board it is a complicated process navigating city hall and inspection....

I guess the new tenants had their first inspection and discovered the "handler's fee" which they did not anticipate..., or the 40K business licence which they did not anticipate either.

Totally...

I don't get it either... the place on the corner of York and Marin comes to mind as well as the huge space next to grove path escalators (that would have made a bad ass bike shop location (nods at grove street bikes))

my guess is that some of these folks are all paid up with old mortgages, and don't need to see a dime of rental revenue (though who wouldn't want a revenue stream no matter how slight)

yep, still don't get it!

When I walked by around 9 p.m. last night, a man and a woman were having an epic argument down there. The guy was really shouting and gesturing wildly. It was so loud that you could hear it on Grove Street.

I never cease to be amazed at the greed of the landlords in this area. Yes, I am naive: I think it would make sense to lease out space at a reasonable rate for a short time (3 years?) and then, when businesses start flourishing here, the landlord could argue that the spaces are more valuable thereby rationalizing fair rent increases. This would keep the community happy with nice businesses and the landlord happy with cash flow.
I guess these landlords don't mind that their properties (eyesores) sit empty for years until someone with enough cash (and a slush fund to grease the city inspectors' palms) comes along to try their luck in JC.

Guess that's why I'll never be a wealthy landlord.

That said, Good luck Duckys and Dumplings -- welcome to JC!

HAH.. i was shocked to see food steamer islands in there the other day. shocked because when i first moved hre i though that would be a cool place for a smallish bistrom and was told by the agent that it was a no food moving forward location. guess some money is better than no money to whoever owned it, since it's been empty for years.
