Come on, man.

The idea is TO TICKET people who don't yield to pedestrians... no to warn them of the traps so they'll never learn to change their ways.

I'd be willing to bet that a solid 75% of the people who roll down Grand, Montgomery, Jersey, and Newark Avenues are not downtown residents. They might not even be urban residents.

Irresponsible drivers DESERVE tickets and points on the licenses.

Good question.

Someone should crack down on JCPD.

I don't get why the crackdown isn't self-funded by the payment of the tickets. Why do we need extra funding to collect fines for traffic violations?

The funds were to provide for a officers to work on a dedicated enforcement program, so overtime is involved, either for them or those who are covering their regular tours.

Now if they'd only do this for stop sign roll-throughs...

Jersey City cops, some posing as pedestrians, have issued drivers hundreds of tickets in state-funded crackdown
Wednesday, July 14, 2010

By PATRICK VILLANOVA
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Careless drivers beware. The Jersey City Police Department is cracking down on aggressive driving across the city.

With grant money doled out by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, Jersey City police have set up aggressive driving hot spots around the city.

And they are catching motorists who are failing to stop for pedestrians.

From April 21 to June 30, uniformed police and officers posing as pedestrians issued over 250 summonses for various traffic offenses, including 125 tickets to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, police said.

The locations of these enforcement points change on a weekly basis and will continue through September, police said.

Failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk can result in a two-point license penalty, a $200 fine and/or up to 15 days community service, according to the Division of Highway Traffic Safety website.

"We're pleased that the traffic safety unit is continuing enforcement of the grant, not only for education, but to protect our citizens and the people that come into the city," Jersey City Police Director Sam Jefferson said.
