UPPER HOBOKEN!

ROFL ROFL ROFL.

I was amused by one last week that said "Hoboken Vicinity"...it was in the center of Union City!

I guess it could be worse: they could start calling the whole area THE WEST SIDE.

I have been tempted to try them many times. My first experience in there was 2 roaches one inside the display case and the other running across the counter as the worker looked on. I am not sure which skeeved me out more, the roach running freely or the worker unphased by it. But I keep hearing how good it is! Extra crunchy burrito Please, hold the antennae!

well, part of our area in the heights/union city/weehawken was actually called West Hoboken in the late 1800s/early 1900s....

I'm not sure what you mean by that. My current neighborhood has 2 bodegas and a laundromat-- that's it. Nowhere to get takeout or grab a beer. Is this neighborhood the same?

Only bodegas ?? no delicatessens, candy stores, or grocery stores ?

It is a horrible block and for the Heights that's SAYING something. And the blocks only get WORSE as you head South. As they approach Christ Hospital the area iimproves a little. HEad West a block or two and the place deteriorates.

Many time I waited for a 99S to NYC bus either on Griffith or Bowers and occasionally did my wash at the Laundromat in the middle of the block.

cheese,
that ugly apartment saved you from making a BIG mistake.

The BIGGEST joke is that a long while ago some real estate numbnuts named the area THE ARTIST DISTRICT, I think there's still a sign. Never was the language so badly mangled. ONE artist moved in and moved back out.

It's a great neighborhood, with a great neighborhood association - Riverview - if there is a problem with noise, crime, dog poo in the park, ie.: the regular stuff of most neighborhoods.

Ogden Avenue to the east is one of the best streets in the city, you have a great park with a skyline view, an elevator down the cliffs to Hoboken and lightrail a few blocks away - cool ethnic restaurants, not fancy but reliable on Central Avenue to the west which also has most basics (and great dollar stores). Transportation rocks, both to NYC and local - the jitneys run downtown every 3 minutes.

There are slumlords here, like everywhere - but you can get bigger spaces for less money, more light and it's even cooler in the summer - we're 10 stories up and get a great river breeze.

My friend lived near there all her life and there was never a problem. Central Avenue is close enough to walk to, so there are places to eat nearby. Again, as you know, there is no perfect place to live where crime never happens, but from my experience it this isn't a bad area.

If you are going to look at a rental on this block PM me. I don't want anyone else to go see this rathole and waste their time. Deadbeat landlords that obviously never fixed anything and pissed their old tenants off. This place is not even habitable-- and for $1550 a month the landlord is insane.

DCs is close and that's great. Other plus's are Shoprite, NYC view, and you're close to lightrail. Foodwise, there's lot of good mexican closeby and some good italian on Central. Many Hoboken restaurants will deliver along with Rasoi and other Newark Ave indian joints. This area of the Heights ain't Kansas but it's safer than where you're coming from and we've never had an issue. I had more safety issues living on Van Vorst park than I do here on Ogden.

Very helpful. I wouldn't mind being closer to DCs at all!

While I agree that visiting a neighborhood at various times is absolutely a good idea, there's lots of blocks, mine at 7th & Monmouth included, where at 10 on a friday you would definitely get the wrong idea of the general feel of the place.

It's not the best of areas and is quite noisy with bus and ambulance traffic (Christ Hospital is right down the street).

As with any area that someone intends to move to, just go hang out there at regular intervals. In this case, Friday night at about 10pm should provide your answer pretty quickly.

Go further into the Heights for a more neighborhood feel.

no...this neighborhood has LOTS of bodegas, a mexican restaurant, a pizza joint, a spanish rest, some hair cutting places, an old jewelry shop, a sneaker shop, 3 laundromats, the new fire station, a daycare place. its not hoboken but its certainly has a few choices to go eat or shop. and central avenue is a few blocks up so you can get some food up there.

the park is nice, but don't walk on the grass, you'll never know what you step into. in other words, it's a giant pet toilet.

well I lived at 450 palisade for many many years. I wouldnt live there again or on that block if they paid me. IM me if you are going to see these places tonite.

It's not a horrible place. there is the park right across the street that of course draws the younger generation, however, compared to where you live now I would totally move to this area. there's the washing machine's right on the corner and they close about 10 pm.

also remember that right on palisade and griffith I believe is where that landlord tried to bomb the place...so again be careful and try to read NJ.com for updates on this area.

How is this area?

I am lviewing an apartment tonight on this block. I currently live by LSP and am looking for a neighborhood that actually has places to eat/drink.

I don't live in a bubble and realize there is crime everywhere but I am afraid to walk 2 blocks away from my apartment (aka go across Pacific Ave) in my current neighborhood. Would like to be able to take my dogs for long walks again...
