Young children (and sometimes adults with dementia) have an unfortunate ability to either open locks that are supposed to secure them or lock themselves in a room when you don't want them to (who hasn't known a kid who has locked themselves in the bathroom?)

LOL I actually know someone who grew up in th 70s in Jersey City. When he was 2 or 3, he would wake up in the middle of the night, grab a popsicle from the bottom freezer and eat it on his front stoop. His parents had no idea (they were sleeping) until a neighbor clued them in. I can see how this can happen, especially if you have a very spirited child.

Three-year-old Jersey City tot found wandering streets at 3 a.m.
By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal

A 3-year-old boy was reunited with his mom after being found alone without shoes after wandering from his Jersey City home early this morning, police reports said.
A 40-year-old woman called the police after spotting the child standing near Bergen and Fairview avenues at around 3:17 a.m. police reports said. The child pointed out where he lives to the police, who found the apartment door unlocked, reports said.
After knocking and getting no response police found the child's 21-year-old mom asleep in bed.
The mother identified the child as hers and went with him to Jersey City Medical Center for an evaluation, police said.
No charges were filed against the mother, but the incident is still under investigation and police notified the state Department of Youth and Family Services, reports said.

I really just wanted to post this story as an excuse to post this.
