They also really struggle with stop signs that aren't all way. Everyone needs to go back to driving school. Even if there was a fully functional light at every intersection, people are still going to hit pedestrians and still block the box. JC people just don't know how to drive. Enforcement is a problem as well. The PD could cover its entire budget by writing tickets for blocking the box on 12th street. Then eventually traffic could actually cross at Erie, Grove, and Marin.

RobotJustin, check out Councilman Steven Fulop's Winter 2010 update. There is supposed to be a new traffic light installed at Marin & 9th St. This was supposed to be installed in 2008 but of course for seemingly ridiculous reasons, its been delayed. This came about after one of the Crossing guards was struck and injured by a car about 2 Summers ago, and I'd like to think at some of my emails to the city urging the serious need for a crossing light at this section. The sickest part of all of this is that it is a major pedestrian crossing for all residents who live in the Hamilton Park district and need to pass through the shopping Mall to get to Path and other areas. I'm totally with you in your anger and frustration at vehicle drivers treating Marin as well as Erie St. like the INDY500 speedway.

Street Lamps: Our office is currently working on obtaining lighting under various portions of the elevated light rail tracks, which pose a safety risk. Opening of Greene Street (at the intersection of Washington and 2nd Street) A pre-construction meeting was convened with the representatives of various agencies and divisions in order to move this project forward. Work will commence in early spring with the result being a pedestrian and driver friendly intersection.

The real problem here is that state statute has already dealt with this issue: cars must stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. Its the law, period. The disconnect between the law and the enforcement of the law however is creating a serious public safety issue. Either the city needs to do a better job of enforcing the law or change the traffic pattern with a traffic light or the installation of speed bumps or the elimination of through traffic.

It's simple. There needs to be a stoplight at 9th. I hope the reports that one is coming are true. If they are, that certainly confirms that those of us complaining that the existing crossing is unsafe are correct.

You can talk about what people "should" do, but a real city looks at what they will do. And that is walk along the shortest route between two points.

It's also very dangerous (and annoying) that people do not stop at the stop sign at 6th and Marin, heading away from the mall. It's a pain to cross there when there's traffic, as it seems that only about 1 in 20 cars actually stop at the stop sign before turning onto Marin.

Increasing the traffic on Marin Blvd is a self correcting problem. The worse the congestion, the more people will seek alternative transportation instead of driving. Also, with enough congestion on Marin, it becomes a very safe road to cross because the vehicles are moving too slowly to harm pedestrians.

I ride my bike to the Path when it is nice out and I used to live up there by Hamilton park and somehow i had no problem crossing the street... oh yeah because i had the common sense to go down a block to 6th so i wouldn't get my ass killed. you live in a city. did you really use psych? really? woah, i really wish i could become as self involved as you... there is a solution to the effing problem walk a block and you will not get nailed by a car(hopefully..well..) this seems pretty reasonable to me.

There's a cross-walk at 9th, and I've got every right to use it. Drivers, who treat Marin like the INDY 500, do not, however, have the right to not yield to my exercising of my pedestrian rights.
Yield to me, drivers, or face the consequences! It's amazing that some people seem to be addicted to wasting their own time. Walking to the light and waiting would add close to 5 minutes to my commute every day - time I could be spending bitching about stuff on JCLIST, or doing my tae-bo. If you're opinion doesn't pertain directly to the question proposed, then I'd kindly suggest you refrain from nattering. Nobody cares about your opinion unless it addresses the problematic at hand. So, for example, Azul_The_Cat - your opinion about walking down to 8th street and crossing at the light - nobody cares about that. If I wanted to hear about alternate routes, I'd of asked "hey, any ideas about stop-lighted crossing areas on Marin?" But see, the reason I didn't ask that question is because I already know that that light is there - so, in other words, what in your nature compelled you to offer such objectively 1. annoying and 2. unrelated advice? Are you possessed by a demon of nagging? What force in you, exactly, made you offer that completely unwanted and unwarranted suggestion? I'm simply amazed that something in you actually, when analyzing the cause and effect chain, decided that suggesting that crossing at the light would somehow be helpful to me, and the thousands of other people who obviously know about the light, but do not want to cross there because we've decided that it wastes our time to do so - would be a good use of our and your time. Can you explain to me your thought process? The reason I'm asking is because I'm writing a psychographic study of a Nazi guard and I'm interested in the thin line between misplaced helpfulness and mindless, thuggish brutality. Psych!

Crossing Marin near the charter school / 9th street is deadly.
How would you go about getting "stop for pedestrian" signs put up in the crosswalk? Is that the law in NJ? That cars have to stop for humuns? If not, then I rescind my request.
