Former Jersey City assistant comptroller indicted for alleged online sex chats with young girls

JERSEY CITY ? A Passaic County grand jury indicted Jersey City?s former assistant comptroller today, charging him with engaging in sexually explicit conversations in 2009 with detectives posing as young girls in online chat rooms, authorities said.

Joseph Ambrosio, 41, of Wall Township, was arrested in November and charged with attempted sexual assault, official misconduct, criminal sexual contact and several counts of luring and endangering the welfare of a child, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said in a press release today.

Ambrosio, who was a Jersey City employee for nearly 12 years, was suspended without pay from his $73,000 a year job as assistant comptroller after his arrest.

He remains suspended without pay until his trial is completed, city spokesman Stan Eason said today.
Investigators said the chats began in January 2009, when detectives from the Passaic County Sheriff?s Officer went undercover in online chat rooms, posing as 12-year-old girls. One of the detectives was soon contacted by Ambrosio, according to the prosecutor?s office.

Valdes said the criminal acts described in the indictment spanned across Passaic, Morris, Hudson and Burlington counties.

If convicted on any of the top counts in the indictment ? attempted sexual assault, official misconduct and luring a child ? Ambrosio could face up to 10 years in prison. He also faces a maximum five-year sentence if convicted of endangering the welfare of a child and a maximum 18-month prison term if convicted of criminal sexual contact.

at least they suspended him without pay. i wonder whether they would have done that a year or so ago ....

An assistant comptroller for Jersey City has been arrested on charges he tried to "chat" with police posing as young girls in an online chat room, according to a report on the Morristown Daily Record's Web site.

Joseph Ambrosio, 41, was arrested at his Wall home shortly after 7 a.m. today following a joint sting by Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale and Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi, the paper said.

According to the Star-Ledger, Ambrosio identified himself as a 29-year-old man.

The chats included Ambrosio telling one officer posing as a 13-year-old girl how to engage in sexual acts and talking about engaging in sexual acts, the Ledger said.
The talks started in July and lasted until this month, police said.
An undercover officer with Hudson County observed Ambrosio participating in sexually explicit chats on his work computer on Nov. 6, authorities told the Ledger.

Ambrosio was charged with one count of attempted sexual assault, six counts of attempted endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of attempted criminal sexual contact.
The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office, Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the Bayonne Police Department and the Jersey City Police Department provided assistance during this investigation, according to the Daily Record.
