Garbage Truck hit a light rail train in Hoboken, Helicopters were covering that story.

You are right, might as well give them a call. But, I would complain about the flights transitting overhead usually to the 30th street heliport. There is a helo route (Newark route) that goes over Newark Airport, along the turnpike extension bridge, to the statue of liberty and up the river. but, if traffic is light, Newark will often clear flights direct to the pad, which brings them right over Jersey City. If the noise bothers you, I would contact the ERHC and ask that they stress to their members to stick to the route. It doesn't add more than a minute or two to the flight.

Thanks for the info Jolly13.
Still doesn't hurt to complain.

This was definitely overkill, and I thought they weren't supposed to be hovering over residential areas!

There is no regulation against hovering over a residential area. They have to stay above 300 feet and they are well above that. The thread you mentioned gives the Eastern Region Helicopter Council's fly neighborly program as a place to complain. That organization has no authority. It's a group of local pilots/operators. They try to self police and to a certain extent have been successful, but mostly dealing with the constant overflights of Long Island while taking folks to the Hamptons. The news companies want coverage. They are going to go where they want.

They are news helicopters. Could just be a normal day of watching traffic. Could be a big delay or accident at the tunnel.

Anyone know why four helicopters were hovering over the Holland Tunnel area for almost an hour between 6am and 7am this morning?

Was it one of their older Bell 412's (Huey style) or their new Agusta A119 Koala's?

I wikipedia'd and it was a Koala.

I was in Hoboken on the pier and that helicopter was extremely low and did 3 loops. It did seem excessively dangerous from a spectators POV. There was some kind of call going across the police radios which I could only hear a little of from a nearby officer. It sounded like they were looking for someone on the pier but I don't see how the chopper could help since he had no spotlight on and nowhere to land. My only guess would be a report of someone in the water. They definitely were NOT watching the fireworks, they were on a call.

May well have been. I'm biased as I work with helos so much that their comings and goings don't phase me much anymore. :)

I think if they were that easily distracted they wouldn't be flying helicopters for a living.

I grew up in this area and spent most of my younger life watching the Macy's fireworks from our family boat. The NYPD and Coast Guard harbor patrol are some of the best in their field.

How is that obnoxious? Like people haven't seen a NYPD helicopter flying low during an event.

Are the 0.50 caliber machine guns mounted on the decks of the US Coast Guard ships that were in the river obnoxious as well?

Possibly, you did not see what we did from LSP. The helicopter you are speaking about did take off suddenly during the Macy's show. What you may not have seen from your vantage point was the sudden activity with some sort of aircraft up by the GWB area. We watched as a few of the military/police helicopters made its way towards the craft that diverted to the right and disappeared. May have been someone flying into the restricted airspace to see the fireworks.

An NYPD helicopter flew three low circles around the pier in Hoboken during the fireworks. It was still hangin' around when the fireworks were over.

They were probably just watchin' the fireworks and checkin' out the crowds.

Does anyone know why there was a helicopter flying low loops in between downtown JC and Liberty State park last night during the fireworks over Liberty State Park?
