on a related note, has anyone noticed an uptick in rude behavior of late? maybe it's because i'm a new parent and am just paying more attention, but the other day in the downtown area experienced back to back to back examples of ridiculously asinine and uncouth behavior.

viz, the parking spot i was waiting for was 'stolen' by another car. the driver just casually looked at me as i explained i'd been waiting, and then rolled up his tinted windows and sat there until i got tired of telling him how much bad karma he was incurring. later in the day, walked to the bagel store and witnessed a near collision on columbus/jersey, as the passenger of the offending car (who was simply asking to be t-boned) lazily gave the finger to the car that managed to slam on the brakes and prevent the crash, and then sped away. then, while walking in vvp and passing the dog run, witnessed a dog attack another dog while the 'innocent' dog's owner tried frantically to get her dog away and the 'aggressive' dog's owner sat on a bench for several seconds just shouting at his dog (finally got up and walked over).

the absence of civility is just ridiculous.

the counter-point to the above is that the volunteers in vvp and parkman did (as always) an AWESOME job yesterday, and reminded me that there are plenty of generous folk in the area. thank you!

Really? This is what has your attention? Need I link to the double-homicide thread, or numerous single-murder threads, etc, etc...? In anything other than a tiny town, you're going to experience rudeness. Sheesh. It's the other stuff you need to worry about.

Yes, renters pay property tax due to increased rent. But I think by-and-large, most renters don't really "feel" the tax because it's not a separate bill. Humans are irrational that way.

I'm a renter, btw. I haven't registered to vote here, primarily because I only intend to be here for two years, max. I'm sure there are lots of renters like me.

And if I *did* vote here, I'd be incentivized to vote for short-term benefit over long-term prosperity.

I live right near there. That stretch between Danforth and Bayonne is comically bad. It's literally funny how terrible that road is. Seriously - when I have friends in the car they laugh out loud as we drive down that road; it's so absurd.

I actually broke a trailing arm on the passenger rear wheel on that stretch.

Honestly, I'll kinda be a little sad to see that stretch get paved. It's such a conversation piece. Plus, it's fun to try and optimally navigate the pot holes; it takes some serious skill.

Re: Donating A Car In Jersey City

I believe the rules for how large a deduction you can take have changed... You used to be able to deduct the blue-book value of the donated vehicle, but now the charity has to give a receipt for WHAT THEY ACTUALLY SOLD YOUR CAR FOR, and you can deduct that amount. So your actual cash savings after tax would be roughly a third of that sale value.

Hence, it would be smarter to just sell your car, since even with a minimal amount of effort you should be able to get at least a third of what the charity would be able to get for it... Unless the car is completely unsalable, in which case you should look into scrapping it (free tow, and they'll usually give you $100 for the scrap-metal value).

And even if donating did make financial sense, I *hate* those cars-for-kids ads on the radio (annoying, and get stuck in your head). So boycott that one - there are plenty of other good charities.

An NYPD helicopter flew three low circles around the pier in Hoboken during the fireworks. It was still hangin' around when the fireworks were over.

They were probably just watchin' the fireworks and checkin' out the crowds.

You can easily get your stock wheels, new, on eBay for under $280 shipped:

I'm sure there are other reasonable sources as well.

Why do people go to dealerships for anything that's not under warranty? Such a rip-off... If you're loaded, that's fine, otherwise it's either ignorance or laziness.

Ok, but don't be fooled by Comcast's "Speedboost" "feature" which doubles the transfer speed, but only for the first 10MB of the transfer. Then you get halved. Most speed tests don't transfer more than 10MB of data, so your results are going to look twice as good as they are, most of the time.

FiOS is also the clear winner for upload capacity, if you're willing to pay for 20/20. You don't even have the option with Comcast.

Also, cable being a shared medium, I notice a huge variety in the performance of my Comcast connection from hour to hour, day to day. By contrast, our FiOS connection at my office has been rock solid from day one, never failing to deliver the advertised 20/20.

I can't wait to get FiOS at home.

Hope you don't mind me fielding a couple of these

It's rarely loud on my block. During the summer, there tended to be some well-attended gatherings on Pearsall, between Princeton and Garfield, but it was fine walking by, and they weren't loud.

I don't really see all that much hanging out (except people on their own front porches).

Danforth Light Rail to Exchange place is exactly 10 minutes. It's 18 minutes to Pavonia Newport, so that should cover all your into-Manhattan needs (via either WTC path or 33rd path respectively). I've taken the light-rail late a number of times, without incident - the ride and walk feels no different at 8pm or 1am. ... Note that the light-rail does stop running late at night. I think the last train leaves Exchange place at 2am, but you should check the schedules - they've changed recently.
http://www.mylightrail.com/

Shopping and restaurants are distinctly lacking in the neighborhood. Nothing notable within walking distance. I have a car, and end up doing most of my shopping in Bayonne. I suppose you could also catch the light-rail into Bayonne. ... I tend to go to restaurants in either Hoboken or Manhattan (via Light Rail, or Light Rail -> Path). You *might* find the ACME shopping center near the bowling alley walkable, distance-wise at least - though it's a little sketchy.

I don't think there are any parks or dog walks close-by.

Hope this helps...

I live 3 blocks from there. It's not too bad - definitely not as bad as the parts of Greenville/Bergen-Lafayette that you typically see discussed here. I've been renting here for about 8 months. We (me and my girlfriend) don't have a problem walking to the light rail, etc...

That said, I would not walk go walking around Ocean Ave (2 blocks north of where you're looking). It's nowhere near as bad as Ocean gets in the heart of Greenville, but still - tons of dudes hangin' out at all hours of the day.

I don't know about the "it's close to Bayonne" argument... Do you notice the incredible change in neighborhood feel as you drive North on Broadway in Bayonne, under the Turnpike bridge, to Garfield in JC? That bridge is a distinct dividing line. ... In fact, I was a regular customer at a deli in Bayonne, and the guy wouldn't deliver past the bridge - not because of distance, but because the neighborhood freaked him out. I'd meet him at the bowling alley - 1/4mi from my apt.

I keep track of the crime reports - here's what comes to mind from around here in the past 8 months: someone was shot in the neck on Ocean and Pearsall in June, I think there was another shooting near Danforth not too long ago, something about a bunch of kids in a car with a shotgun near Garfield in this area, and I believe a number of the thugs mentioned in some reports live(d) on Neptune.

Oh, and do you remember that news story a few weeks ago about those idiots who broke into a store, put the ATM in the back of their Jeep, and sped off, forgetting to unplug the ATM, resulting in the machine falling out of the Jeep? That was 2 blocks from where you're looking; corner of Gates and Garfield.

Honestly, there seem to be far more muggings and break-ins in "nicer" neighborhoods, such as downtown and the heights. ... I tend to think that as long as you're not directly involved in the crap that I'm sure goes on around here, you're fairly safe. I haven't seen mention of any random crime (no muggings, home break-ins, packs of roving teens beating people, etc) in this neighborhood.

The "feel" of a neighborhood is definitely street by street, though... Just try to spend some time walking around the area to see what you think - and do it at different times of day, and days of the week.

Yeah, this bailout is costing the average taxpayer $5072.

I've both struggled financially and lived prudently, never beyond my means. I loathe the idea of forking over $5k (actually, more cuz I'm well over the median income now) to cover the irresponsibility of both banks and middle-class over-consuming average American morons.

Seriously - it's been maddening watching people spend WAY over their means for years. I've been unable to comprehend how people with half my income could spend twice as much as I do... Now the consequences of others' fiscal carelessness finally hit, and it costs me money. Great.

Hey, I'm a law-abiding resident of Greenville, and I certainly want more cops around, would support them, and agree that the actions of the police officers in this incident were justified.

I loathe how people love to hate cops. I've certainly encountered some less than ideal ones myself, but especially in towns like this, these guys really are putting themselves in danger quite a bit.

This isn't one of those cases where a cop merely thought he saw a gun and shot an innocent. This incident involved drugs, a guy with a bunch of priors, and, of course, an illegal fully loaded weapon.

I live two blocks from that intersection (only been here a few months, though). It is indeed walkable to the light-rail; maybe an 8-10 minute walk. And, yes, it's South of the part of Greenville where most of the bad stuff seems to happen.

But, do your research. Walk around the area at all times of day and night, different days of the week, etc, to get a feel for it. I get a little weirded out by Ocean Ave sometimes (and I'm always in a car). I seem to recall an article about someone being shot on the corner of Ocean and Pearsall a few months ago, and something else about a couple of guys who lived on Neptune near Garfield getting arrested for driving around with a sawed-off shotgun.

That said, I haven't personally had a problem in the area, or seen anything bad myself.

But if you're willing to live there, why not Bayonne? You can go just one or two more light-rail stops down, and you're in fairly nice parts of Bayonne. I'm sure real-estate prices are a little higher, but probably not ridiculously so.
