Wow, ok. So I was just making an optimistic guess about the holes and fences. I know homeless people live in there. I've seen them going in many times from Enos Jones, where the fence has many gaps. You can also see from the bridge as you go up Newark Ave. Where those folks would go...

Mend what hole in ten years? It has been along time since I have been near the entrances to the train tracks but I never remember any fences along that side of the tracks. I remember the 7th, 8th and 9th street entrance always being wide open. That area will never be completely blocked off because so many homeless people live there and its not just a couple it is a few dozen at least. When I first read the man's age and the time it occurred I thought he might be homeless. The tunnel the man died in locally known as "Dead Mans Tunnel" was/is popular with kids that try to travel from one end to the other. When I was younger my dad told me the tunnel got its name from a brother of a friends of his that died riding on a freight train as a kid in that same tunnel a few decades ago. I don't know if that was the first time the name was ever used but it makes sense to me.

Yes, they'll cut it again, but the hole should still be fixed. Graffiti gets painted over, and it returns... to be painted over again. It's frustrating, but it's the right way to do it. Here: no attempt to mend the hole in 10 years.

And why was the fence hole made in the first place - fixing it will only see it broken again. Stupid is as stupid does !

The only way you get cut in half by a train is if you are laying across the tracks - Imagine the train drivers horror !

Many people have ventured into the tunnels/arches for a bit of sight-seeing on walking tours.
Whoever this person is. . . my condolences to his family and friends.

And you are correct. Bisections by rail are rarely instantly fatal. Sometimes the sheer amount of pressure is enough to seal/cauterize the wound as soon as it is inflicted. Happened to a suicidal worker in Hoboken a few years back, happened to a freight hopper off st pauls as well. Told the family it was instant and painless, but that was a lie.

Oh, here we go.. tell me this: what the F was he doing in a railroad tunnel? If it was suicide, he had no respect for himself. If it was an accident, then he's an idiot because there's a track shelf in that tunnel.

the sad part is he was probably still alive after the accident and before he died of blood loss / shock. but of course, if it's not about healy or dog poop, then this shouldnt concern anyone, and in fact we should try and make a joke at the man's (and his family's) expense.

Man struck, killed by Conrail train in Downtown Jersey City tunnel
by Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal Friday June 19, 2009, 12:04 PM A man was struck and killed by a Conrail train, his body cut in two, inside a tunnel in Downtown Jersey City, police said. The body was found early this morning in the tunnel near the foot of Ninth Street but police have only tentatively identified him at this point as a 44-year-old Jersey City man, officials said. A train operator called 911 after seeing the man who had been cut in half at the waist, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. Investigators from the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark responded and the man was pronounced dead at 1:35 a.m., DeFazio said. CSX police contacted homicide investigators at DeFazio's office at about 2 a.m., but the prosecutor said the death does not appear to be a homicide.
