What happened to this market/deli across Essex Street light rail station? It was open on Friday, closed on Monday?

They had the same stuff as Hudson Greene sells only two blocks away. I was looking forward to them opening a few years ago, only to be disappointed in the selection and the prices, in addition to the rudeness of some of the checkout folks. I have had enough of gourmet markets. I would rather have had a Quik Check.

A Market Feeds Its High-Rise By TAMMY LA GORCE David Chung rarely lacks topics for elevator conversation in the 37-story Liberty Towers apartment building in Jersey City, where he lives. Mr. Chung, 21, is co-owner of the ground-floor Liberty Towers Gourmet, a sprawling market he and his parents, Joanne and John Chung of Berkeley Heights, opened last year. Fellow tenants regularly greet him with comments about the hot-food bar, for instance ($6.99 per pound; a recent visit turned up crispy crab cakes, as well as a tangy barbecued steak with peppers). Or requests: ?Sometimes people want something special, and we can usually get it,? he said. Liberty Towers Gourmet, which also sees brisk breakfast and lunch business from employees of Goldman Sachs nearby, is essentially an urban deli gone massive and deluxe. Roughly half its 9,000 square feet of space is given over to a well-edited selection of produce and pantry staples like specialty teas, organic rice and pasta; the other half is an upscale food court, including indoor seating for three dozen and outdoor seating for 20. A deli serving sandwiches, where imported and domestic meats and cheeses can also be ordered by the pound, abuts a sushi bar that doubles as a Mexican grill serving tacos and burritos. Rounding out the takeout side of Liberty Towers Gourmet are a smoothie bar and a small bakery area with cookies and baguettes. ?We researched the area before we opened, and we?ve found that what people want is variety,? Mr. Chung said. ?We jumped on the opportunity to offer a lot of it.? Liberty Towers Gourmet, 33 Hudson Street, Jersey City; (201) 434-1500. Open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. http://events.nytimes.com/2010/06/27/nyregion/27qbitenj.html

I just moved into the building and have eaten at Liberty Towers gourmet twice. I thought the sushi was very good considering it isn't a sushi restaurant. I also had my first walk around the grocery area today and I was very happy with the variety for such a small grocer.
All in all its a good place and I'm glad it stays open past 5, I'll definitely be a frequent visitor.

you guys are funny :)
no, i did not mcguyver up my own stool analysis.... any doctor who can take a decent history & physical would diagnose this without doing studies. if the symptoms continued, if my fever was higher, or there was blood or mucus coming out, then yes, stool studies and bloodwork are indicated. i was only vomiting, it was self limited (12-16 hours) nothing from the other end - which points to viral enteritis. and i can understand that competitors may try to slag new businesses opening up. thats not my intention. i really just wanted to know if it happened to anyone else. i'm an attending at jersey city medical center, i live in paulus hook, and am GLAD that we have this addition to the neighborhood. the owners are actually going to the extent of replacing all cutting boards in the back, replacing the knives they use, and retraining their staff. as said many times, they are nice, professional people. we went to them so that if this had happened to anyone else, they could correct it - so they stick around - because we need them in the neighborhood! sorry if i started any controversy here. who's up for sushi?

Doc, if you are a doc, my apologies. If you look back in the archives for all the reported cases of phantom food poisoning at new restaurants in JC, you'd think your neighborhood was like the PATH train to Hoboken at 2AM on St. Patty's day, a virtual vomitorium.

I have some medical questions.
So, being a doctor,I assume you were able to analyse your own stool sample using the blender and some commonly found household chemicals? Also, is the delusion of being married when you are really just cohabitating a common symptom of food poisoning? Also, do you watch House? If he is so smart, why does he always get everything wrong before he finally gets it right 5 min before the show ends?

lol...i have good success w/zyrtec
if all the standard ones fail: zyrtec, claritin, allegra you should see your doc & consider desensitization (depending on how bad the allergies are) also....acupuncture can do wonders for seasonal allergies

Everyone needs to calm down here...
She is my fiance, if I wrote wife in the first post it was by mistake. If you felt like I did this morning, you would have been out of it, too. I woke up this morning and was curious if anyone else had this experience. This thread is what I found, and so I registered to post. Being a physician, I know the chronology of food borne illnesses, and stool samples are not necessary for a diagnosis. Neither is serology. This is the only thing we have done differently lately, and there is a clear temporal relationship between the time of eating their food and getting sick. Why would I say how nice they have been if I am trying to take them down? And just so you all know, they actually made my fiance come back so they could give her a basket of foods/cheeses/etc in apology. Clearly they are a class act, but unfortunately I had a bad experience. And it was not just me, this was twice. Once on Sunday after she got sushi, and then again last night after I ate the papaya. So bottom line: I just wanted to know if it happened to anyone else. They are very very nice people and I will continue to shop from them for other things. Does that satisfy you all? Jeez....

Aren't stool samples and/or bloodwork at a lab required to make a diagnosis of food poisoning?
It's unfortunate that whenever a new restaurant opens in JC it's impossible to trust the reviews here, particularly when they come from new posters.

Have you been to a doctor to confirm that you do in fact have food poisoning and that it did come from Liberty Towers Gourmet?

Very interesting about the sulfur. Because soon after eating the papaya I got a bunch of hives, which I never experienced in the past w/food poisoning.
Papaya sometimes has a strong smell, but it definitely was more sulfur-y than usual. Will have to check on that. Since I was in bed all day, my fiance went by & spoke w/the owner. She said they were extremely polite, professional, and apologetic. Nice that there are still people like that around. I prob. wont be getting fresh food there, but will continue to shop for other stuff.

I had the sushi once, and the buffet three times. The sushi was at lunch time. One of the buffet was after work when I knew that the mac and cheese was sitting there for seven hours because I saw them take it out, but I took it anyway. I was fine.
Ask them if they spray the cut fruits with anything. Some people are allergic to sulfur. I still think the sushi, burrito, and buffet should be discounted in the evening.

I was very happy & relieved to see a place like this open up...
HOWEVER My wife and I have had 2 episodes of food poisoning after eating prepared food here. First was a couple days ago, she got very ill after eating the sushi. I nevertheless went back, spoke w/the gentleman behind the counter & told him he may want to check the temps on the cooler/fridge, etc. He was very polite & apologetic. I bought some of the cut papaya & ate it last night. Like clockwork, 2 hours later became violently ill and have not slept a wink all night because I've been vomiting. So....beware of the prepared/refrigerated food. Has anyone had a similar experience with them?

I got a burrito there the first week they opened. Pretty good.
Kudos on opening this in the area. It needed it. The Green Cow is just not cutting it.

ah so that's why my lunch seemed cheaper today, i was happy to finally able to not exceed $10 :P the lady was advertising "hot/cold salad" $5.99 i had no idea she meant it was the whole buffet. yeah $5.99 is more reasonable, usually it's $15 for me which is same as going to any of the rest, just dont need to wait for food. anywayz.....

How can we take a review like this serious when the reviewer joined 2 weeks ago, name is "LibTowers" and has all of 1 post? Be honest, do you work at Green Cow or Downtown Pharmacy? Give 'em a break, they've been open, what, two weeks total?

Last week, the buffet was $7.99/lb, which I thought was expensive. But today, I saw that the buffet is now $5.99/lb. It's their grand opening special. I finally tried it today. $5.99 is more reasonable. I hope they keep it at that price.
Also, they should not charge the same price for the buffet all day long. I have seen them put out the hot food at 10 AM in the morning. After the lunch period, they should lower the price of the buffet. 50% off would be good.

I do think its a great edition to the neighborhood. And Dave, the owner's son, is very genuine when he says that he is open to all suggestions. I met him right after they opened and he seems true to his word.
Good luck guys!
