I've always been amused by some of the odd local pronunciations. I'm thinking specifically of Tonnele Ave (or spelled Tonnelle if you're in North Bergen.) Out-of-towners always say it 2 syllables: Tonn-elle. But long-time locals know it's 3 syllables: Tonn-elle-ee (long E added to the end.) Anyone know why?
It's also taken me a while to get used to saying Secaucus with a long-E and emphasis at the start: SEE-cau-cus.

Maybe it is just me, but on the West Side I always find it odd that Stegman Parkway crosses first a street called Stegman Terrace, then Stegman Place, then finally Stegman Court.
How do people who live there explain to other people about this Stegman issue? ...Wait what am I saying...

Yes I know Manila is the capital of the Phillipines. And I LIVE on Manila and don't see any Filipinos around here.

The Manila - Grove thing always bothered me as well. There is NO NEED, in general, to have streets re-named in different sections. The only thing this accomplishes is confusion for everyone.

Not necessarily the name that is odd, but why does Grove St. start out as 'Grove St.' up near 16th St., then change to 'Manila Ave.' around 12th St., then back to 'Grove St.' down near First St. I guess this Mr. Manila guy was not important enough to have the entire street named after him Ansky, This "Mr. Manila" guy is also known as the capital of the Philippines - take a walk down the street and you'll see a lot of Filipinos living on this street as well as throughout JC. Duh.

Manila Ave. must be a neighborhood description of sorts.

These aren't the weirdest street names, but this always bothered me....Van Reipen Avenue and Van Reypen Street.
They are pronounced the same way and are in close proximity of each other (Journal Square neighborhood). This would cause severe annoyance with getting mail and with food delivery. I'm sure there is a ton of mix-up.

i remember there was a thread on here before where someone said something about 'vroom street', and another poster replied that he had thought the OP was just making a sound effect and not talking about a street name

Say "schtoyben" Could be named for Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben... one of the most important figures in American history, without whom the colonies may not have won their independence. (I spent a lot of time in Valley Forge as a kid--his name is all over the place.)

Yeah some street names may sound peculiar. but remember that JC was settled by the Dutch way before the Brits took a hold and therefore street names Like Vroom, Stueben, etc are all Dutch derivatives. I guess you have to be dutch to really appreciate them? CK

I nominate Vroom Street.
Sounds like a little kid named that street..."Car goes, Vroom, Vroom!" Any other strangely named streets out there?
