Re: Stupid neighbor who hates trees

There's a big tree in front of my house that has grown its roots right into the sewer pipe underneath. The roots in the pipe have caused backups and have flooded the bathroom and kitchen downstairs. I have had to call several plumbing companies to clear the pipe and to shave the roots of the tree.
I've called JC municipal and quality of life several times and have been told that the tree is the town's property but the sidewalk is mine and it is my responsibility to pay for the sidewalk to be repaved after the roots have been shaved.

Basically, they would come and lift the tree, shave its roots and put it back in the ground. The cost of repaving the sidewalk is in the thousands.
This is ridiculous! I think the tree is nice but what it's doing to my home is not and Jersey City needs to be more considerate when planting them. They need to do a better job figuring out where to plant them and need to consult homeowners as well.

Re: Landlords warned on legal temperatures (70 degrees days - 65 degrees overnight)

they are ticketed! neighborhood improvement district (NID) of jersey city sends out their workers to drive around and take pictures of homeowners who haven't cleaned up their sidewalks. a week later, they get a ticket in the mail for $105, with the picture as proof, of course.

Eyes Cafe

Eyes Cafe recently opened up in the heights, where Ceviche used to be. Their menu includes shish kebabs, kofta, gyros, vegetarian items upon request and hookahs. My fiance and I went there on a Friday evening and it was packed! After 8pm, they turned down the lights, played arabic music and everyone inside was dancing.

We had a really nice time and would definitely go back. The cafe is located on Central, off of Congress. They don't seem to have a website yet.

Re: Tenant Fraud

Aside from a credit check, which I think is a must, you should also ask for a list of references, maybe even the number of a current employer. There's really no stopping the individual from giving you a false number, but that hasn't happened to me yet.

I also buy a stack of leases from staples and add additional stipulations into them, such as, if payment is more than five days late, a late fee is charged, etc....

I have all propective tenants fill out an application that I create myself. It includes name, ss#, references, salary info, years he's been employed, # of individuals that plan on moving in, how long of a least he's willing to sign....

Good luck!
