Absolutely. I grew up in a rotten neighborhood in JC, but Cub Scouts, Little League, and CYO made the difference. A decent percentage of us joined the military, went to college, or went to work. There was no magic solution except keeping busy and having some kind of structure in the home. Can't put this whole burden on teachers or law enforcement.

The city even had something like a sunshine fund that took the entire neighborhood in chartered buses to state parks and beaches when school was out. Seemed like a small price to pay to keep 30 preteens busy during the summer.

Hey Dudes,

Ya don't have to live in the projects to feel like your living in The Wire.

And yes ya might be able to live with it... but why should you have to?

What we seek, and what is needed here is change.

This is a national problem.

What's needed are havens where the youth can go to stay out of trouble after school and on weekends.

Violent incidents fueled by gang rivalries at public housing complexes

How is this news?

I wonder if anyone reading this thread remember who the Jersey City BONES were? Or the Sons of Marion? Or the Brothers of the Jersey City Heights? Historically, Jersey City has been a hotbed of gangs and cliques, and the responses to the gang culture have been ineffective, toothless, and lacking in real results.

Some kids will grow out of it and others will die or go to jail from it--no different from the past.

This is not The Wire... Welcome to Jersey City my friends. It's still an okay place to call home as long you don't mind the occasional B.S.

Cops adding cameras

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Through an interlocal agreement with the Jersey City Housing Authority, the Jersey City Police Department is installing security cameras at the Booker T. Housing Family Development and Montgomery Gardens Family Development public housing complexes.

The measure was to be voted on last night by the City Council and was expected to win approval.

Several violent incidents have taken place at these public housing complexes in recent years, some of them fueled by gang rivalries, according to police and community leaders.

The five-year agreement calls for installing two cameras at each complex. The cameras will be monitored by the police department's CCTV Control Room.
