OK, it ain't no Paulus Hook, but it is Downtown. I just saw that the 3 or 4 bedroom duplex apartment at 302 Newark Avenue has a new sign on it -- I saw a worker/landlord painting and stuff so it might be nice inside.

Walking around the neighborhood is always a great idea. I found my 1-BR from a "for sale" sign around the corner from my last place after looking at a bunch of lesser places. You should also check out the Jersey Journal and the Jersey City Reporter. Some of the brownstone owners are "old school"; don't bother with the internet and go with a sign or a local paper. In your price range a big 1-BR or a decent sized 2-BR shouldn't be a problem.
Good Luck! Quote:

Best to hit up the real estate brokers on Grove Street (south of the PATH). There are a bunch of brokers with rental listings that should help you out. That said, I've seen some very good deals for 1 or 2BR brownstone rentals. You should be able to find something in your range, for sure. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to go wander around the neighborhood this weekend and try to find something. To answer your questions:
I'm looking for a brownstone apartment, not a high rise, mainly because of parking fees. Buying's not an option because we don't know how much more than a year we'll be in the area. A roomy 1-BR would be just fine, and a 2-BR would be even better, though I realize potentially out of price range. We're currently in a VVP 1-BR apartment that's about 500 sq. ft and just not big enough, especially kitchen space.

Buy a condo in Paulus hook for 1500-2000 per month? Not quite. Try 3000-4000 per month. Renting is much cheaper right now as far as out of pocket money is conerned. Not to mention the 100k you'd need up front to purchase a condo.

What kind of space do you want for that price. A studio or one bedroom is priced in that range but it is a little under for a 2 bedroom.
There always seems to be for rent signs by owners in that neighborhood (I even saw one 3 days ago). I would suggest walking around and looking at for rent by owner signs. Another possible source may be looking at the Jersey City Reporter or Jersey Journal websites for classified ads. Good luck looking.

huh? you can pretty much rent any 1br for that price. Just go into all the rental offices in the buildings and ask if they have units availiable. The twin tower by the goldman sachs building, gotham around the komegashi restaurant, and the new rentals by grove path.

The apartments in the Downtown JC area do move fast. We were looking for awhile via Craigslist, broker and just plain walking around the neighborhood. We found our apartment just by seeing a FOR RENT sign in front of the building.

I hate to say it, but you should probably start looking through a broker. The selection is far better than on Craigslist.

Essex commons, Windsor Liberty House are both low rises run by the management company. You can do it without a realtor.

Hi JCList, I'm looking for some advice about finding an apartment in Paulus Hook.
I've been obsessively watching craigslist and the few apartments in the neighborhood that aren't high rises seem to fly really quickly. I'd like to hear any success stories or recommendations for getting a good place (between $1500 and $2300, if it's relevant) in the neighborhood, and doing it without a realtor! Thanks for your help.
