Guys, being in the recycling business, these companies will often pay their workers on a per route basis, not hourly. By picking up at night, they can quickly finish up their pick up's and call it a night. If you started having the p/u's performed earlier, it would be the tax payers footing the bill for these guys working longer shifts/hours. It is a shame re: the recycling. It really doesnt matter weather it is bagged, loose etc. They throw it all into the same truck and sort it out at their Newark facility. Have you ever noticed that every so often, the garbage truck picks up the recyclables too. I can guarantee that they cannot reclaim the recyclables out of that load. You can thank Waste Management for that . Thats how much of a $$$ amount they put on time in motion. If the recycling truck is full, it all goes into the trash. That way they dont have to dispatch the recycling crew one more time that night.

These late night garbage pickups make zero sense. With the racket they bring they cause much more of a disturbance to many more people trying to get to sleep than the old day time pickups that caused an inconvenience to relatively few people who had to wait in their cars behind the trucks.

HAHAHA 201 is right, I know the old saying if you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything but you people that complain about this kinda stuff have got to be kidding. I was reading this and thinking to myself if it was a joke or not but I guess its real. I wouldnt have said anything but 201 put it the best and I had to give him kudos for that.

i could swear i read somewhere (maybe the jc journal) a public official commenting that one of the corrolary benefits of nighttime pick-up was a reduction in crime - does anyone else remember this?

at any rate they were supposed to install special sound reducing equipment on the trucks. i couldn't tell any difference and at any rate this phantom equipment probably wouldn't extend to the crew yelling to each other at the top of their lungs.

i personally am in favor of doing nighttime recycling pickups since it lessens the window for people to come picking through our stuff and leaving it in a condition that the workers don't want to pick up.

and on the subject of that, i love it when people move into the neighborhood and are confused when their greasy pizza box sitting by itself on the sidewalk doesn't get picked up.

The fact that this is even a topic proves JCList is full of out of town gayness. If you're that disturbed by a garbage truck, maybe you shouldn't be living in a CITY!!!... This is the shit that baffles me. You want to move to a city then turn around and whine about everything living in a city brings.. Stop crying.

They are really picky about recyclables. They only pick up recyclables from my street on Thursdays and they will only pick them up if they are packaged properly. Such is life I suppose!

Usually they are very good about picking up our condo's trash and recyclables.. but this past week they left an entire barrel of bottles and cans. Nothing different about it than any other week so I don't know why as I checked it out.

We have ten units in our building, so we can't afford to have entire barrels of recyclables left behind. We need the barrel emptied so we may refill it again.

Yeah, I live on Mercer street, and they come here between 12:30 and 1 am, usually. They wake me up every time, including recycle nights....so three nights a week of being woken up. Of course my bedroom window faces the street, but what can I do?

It does not matter to me especially what time they come, as long as they come and
take ALL the bags that have been put out.

On my block, Third St. between Erie and Jersey, the
collection people are very selective and hit-and-miss
about their job.
Oftentimes, they leave most of a building's bags behind,
and it is practically impossible to get them to take
recycleables.
No,the explanation is not that the stuff is not
prepared and/or packaged properly -- it is that they don't
care enuf to be thorough.

A phone call to the incinerator authority sometimes
gets them to come back and clean up their mess,
but usually it does not.

Everybody, just keep on paying your taxes and not
expecting much in return!!

I always wondered why they came to pick up from my area at 1 AM. The noise is not that bad, but I agree that they should keep their collection times betwen 10 and 12.

It would also be lovely if they could put my trash can back in the upright position and not throw it somewhere so I find it laying sideways far from where I put it. :)

I'm not crazy about it either. Sure, the noise is bad in the summer when the windows are open -- but even worse are the windy nights. Some mornings I have to search the block to see where my garbage can ended up.

No, we were told by Owen Dabney of the JCIA at the HCA mtg that garbage must be put out after 7PM and before 10PM as the JCIA start collecting at 10PM and may collect as late as till 2AM. This is confirmed on their site:

EVENING TRASH COLLECTION SCHEDULE PICKUP DAYS & RECYCLING COLLECTION SCHEDULE PICKUP DAYS.

The following is a list of examples of collection days and times for Trash Collection:

CURRENT TRASH COLLECTION DAYS DAYS & NEW HOURS TO PLACE AT CURB

Monday & Thursday place trash at curb Sundays (for Monday pickup) & Wednesdays

Tuesday & Friday place trash at curb Mondays (for Tuesday pickup) & Thursdays (for Friday pickup) evening between 7:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. only

Wednesday & Saturday place trash at curb Tuesdays (for Wednesday pickup) & Fridays (for Saturday pickup) evening between 7:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. only

If you have any questions regarding the above please feel free to contact us at 201-432-4645 ext. 625.

Perhaps they could start at a more "reasonable" hour say after 8pm. Not too much traffic and the noise would not be as noticeable inside our homes?

It's to avoid traffic jams. The noise isn't bad compared to being stuck behind one and being late for work or getting your kid to school.

i can totally agree, i get stuck behind them almost every night coming home from work, but in a way, i'd rather be tied down on my way home from work than on my way to school at 8 or 9am and then have to wait 45 minutes into my class while i find parking in the deck at njcu... it's a hassle because of the noise at night, yet convenient in the morning because i can get to school or work on time. i guess it helps us yet hurts us at the same time.

I know this topic is covered someplace else... but I'm not looking for it at this hour.
