Why bother with the turnpike? You can get there very easily without "driving through a ghetto."
Take Grand St. to Garfield Ave. Garfield Ave. to Danforth Ave. Danforth Ave. to Kennedy Blvd.

Take the turnpike to Exit 14A - it's the quickest way; of course there will be a toll - but it's not that much $ if you feel you can't drive safely through a "ghetto".

Driving to Bayonne DMV

We live near the grove st path station and need to travel to the Bayonne DMV to get my wifes license. She has to write the knowledge test which is no longer conducted at 538 Summit Ave.
I wanted to know what is the best route to that DMV considering we have to cross the "ghetto" to reach there. I have checked google maps and mapquest, I get the following four options 1. Directly drive on JFK Blvd from Grand St-Communipaw Ave. (fastest) 2. Take Route 440 and exit to JFK Blvd (slowest) 3. Drive on West Side ave, use Danforth Ave to get to JFK Blvd 4. Drive through Garfield Ave and then take Danforth Ave to get to JFK Blvd Any sort of suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Pranil

I have had infinitely better luck and better service at the DMV in Bayonne. It's a straight shot on JFK Blvd toward Bayonne - about a 15 minute ride from Journal Square. They have parking, the lines are shorter, and the folks there are way nicer than the Summit Ave DMV.
If you have to use the DMV for anything these days, make sure you bring every conceivable form of ID you have because they ask for everything (my birth certificate, my social security card, my marriage license, a passport and a proof of residence address (utility bill) was needed to renew my license and adjust the name to my married name). Geez. There are a few for-pay parking lots on Summit/Sip Ave near the DMV in JC. I think the cheapest is across from the Burger King. You can also have some luck parking on Magnolia for free and walking about three blocks to DMV.

There are lots around there, but nothing specifically for the DMV customers.
It's a three or four block walk from the back of Journal Sq, about five minutes or less, if you go out the Kiss and Ride or whatever its called, exit.

When I first moved to Jersey City, a service station wanted to charge me $75 for an inspection fee to get my NJ sticker. I then discovered the state's drive-through inspection station in Secaucus where they look at your car for free. Thought I'd pass that along - you never have to pay to get your inspection sticker!

Yeah my car failed a gas cap test also (Saturn). It was easily resolved by buying a new one at the local Strauss for $10-15. I'm sure you can find one at Pep Boys if that's more convenient.

You probably actually can fix the whole problem with a new gas cap. Especially if its a Honda.
New Jersey's emissions test was changed a few years ago and many cars fail because the gas cap is not sealed perfectly. When I had the problem I replaced the cap and it was fine. Also, the sales rep at Honda basically was like, "emissions test, right?" which leads me to believe NJ's emission test basically is scam to get us to buy a new gas cap every two years. The state pension plan must own stock in a gas cap manufacturer or something.

lipzilla, if you did not pass your inspection because of an emissions failure you MUST go to a repair facility approved by the DMV to get the repairs done. It sounds like it is an emissions-related problem if your car failed the gas cap test, but look at the inspection report you were given to be sure.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help. I went to the Bayonne DMV and it was so quick and easy. I got my new, NJ license and transfered title of a car that I bought from a NY resident and got my NJ license plates. The Bayonne DMV is efficient, organized and very knowledgeable.
I also went to Central Ave and got myself the $15 zone permit. That was easy as well. Since I was doing this car stuff, I also went for the NJ inspection, but I did not pass. I think I have a slight problem related to a gas cap. Was wondering if anyone knows a good, reliable mechanic that specializes in repairing cars that did not pass NJ inspections.

Hello,
I am buying a car from a friend in Brooklyn. The car has NY plates. I live in JC. I want to register the car and get NJ license plates. Do I need to bring the car down to the DMV or can I just bring the Bill of sale, proof of residence and ID? Is the DMV also where I apply for a parking permit or is that a different office? Thanks for your help.
