Difficult to understand what the fuss is about. I tried it for the first time and found that for a pizza place the choice of pizza was not that great. It's basically just 'build your own'. I chose the marinara which is supposed to come without cheese (very clearly says so in the menu) with a couple of toppings. When it arrived, of course, it was covered with cheese. I didnt want to make a big deal about this or wait for another pizza so I pointed this out and they took off about 15% from the bill. I thought this was very fair.

I may not be a connoisseur of pizza but my idea of thin crust is more like what you get at Bertucci's or Simple. I really like the pizza you get there. My experience at John's was distinctly 'blah'.
Maybe I'll try John's in New York for comparison but I'm in no hurry to go back to the one in PH.

My boyfriend and I went there for dinner last night. We also had a couple of drinks before-hand and I'll get to that in a minute. We enjoyed the fried calamari as an appentizer and ordered a large cheese pizza with a few toppings. Both were terrific! With the pie, we also ordered a half carafe of white and red wine, which proved a good value. The service was very friendly, courteous, and prompt.

What I think we'll both pass on the next time we go however, are the $14 martinis at the bar. WOW. I think you'd be hard pressed to find that price at the most expensive place here in JC...or even NYC for that matter. Yes, it was top shelf liquor and I drink them all the time and don't ever complain about the price really. It just seemed totally out of place there.

That said, John's a long-needed good pizza place for downtown JC. They deliver too!

Snapple - was your waitress an older blonde woman? She was my waitress the other night and was HORRENDOUS! She was scatterbrained and painfully slow (took 5 - 10 minutes to fulfill a simple request and longer if we had to remind her of the request). Believe it or not we were there for almost 3 hours!

Despite the horrible service, we had a wonderful meal. The food was excellent. We will definitely be back, but will make sure that we get a different waitress!

It's tough to find good help these days.

The pizza was great, but they should keep a candle under it or something after putting it on the table. It gets cold quick since it's suspended in mid air by that tray holder. The other food we had was just so so (meatballs, sausage, etc). Our waitress was awful. Overall, I'd say it's a great addition to the neighborhood though.

Absolutely!

We were finally able to have dinner here last night, just a pizza and a salad. The pizza is great when they first bring it out. And while I like La Rustique's cheese better, John's crust is superb. By the end of the meal however it certainly didnt live up to the expected quality. We finished it off though, so I can't vouch for microwave- or fridge-temperature leftovers. But I would say stick with the regular food for delivery and save the pizza for the visits. And eat it quick!

Carmine's is a much better choice. If you are going to get technichal with "brick oven" La Rustique and Grimaldi's are better choices.

La Rustique will be moving this summer, so the additon of John's will make that move less painful for me ( I am a HUGE fan of La Rustique).

Does John sell slices or just pies?

Speaking of food - anyone know what happened to the Amazon Cafe (located by the Waterfront in the office building by the Pierhouse). I ran by this morning and it was closed w/an official looking document stating that the place was to be padlocked, no addmittance, etc.).

sounds like it's closer to the swanky joint they had on the upper west side than the hole in the wall on bleecker.

if they do takeout/delivery it's going to be a real problem for la rustique which would be a shame.

You've got to go there and check it out....Johns is much more than a Pizza parlor. Its gorgeous inside and much roomier than than presto's actually. And the menu is much more than just pizza...entrees, paninis, subs, all kinds of martini drinks, etc. I like Presto's too and I would love nothing more than to have Paulus Hook turn into a Little Italy!

I think John's is basically a pizza parlor where Prestos is more of a restaurant atmosphere. I don't either will have to be concerned both can live in harmony together. Hey before you know Downtown J.C can have a Little Italy again.

Love it!! Went there tonight...the staff was attentive, the food was excellent, the prices were reasonable and the ambiance was great too. We will definitely be eating there again. John's is exactly the type of restaurant Paulus Hook needed. Presto's will really have to step it up a notch to keep up with their new competition.

We went there tonight - the hostess said they opened last night. We had the fried calamari and a plain pizza, both of which I really enjoyed. The pizza had really nice, thin crust, which is tough to find. The service was pretty good, especially since it's only their second night. The interior was nice, not too different from Pronto Cena. I got the impression that its a family friendly place, as there were a fair number of kids. The menu seemed to be pretty traditional Italian food, with reasonable prices. Definitely will give La Rustique a run for their money...

This place looks to be open. I passed by Friday after work. TV's were on at the bar, people at tables. Didn't fully investigate-maybe it's in "previews" but there is definitely food being served to someone inside. Any reports?

Any update on when John's is going to open? We can't wait for decent, local pizza. Headed to Hoboken for Grimaldi's last night. It was good, but John's will be a welcome addition to the local scene.

Does anyone know when it's scheduled to open? It does seem like they have been working on it for a very long time.

I often walk by, they've been working on it for a while. But they are working on it and the menus are still up in the window. Definitely looking forward to more choices in the neighborhood. Though La Rustique is still fantas-tique! I wish Kitchen Cafe still had their brunch.
