Today Salsa Fever on2 is offering a groupon for their salsa classes in the heights. They are a well known school among dancers in the region, and have everything from beginners classes to a performance company.
http://www.groupon.com/r/uu824939

You can order a 5, 10, or 20 class package. Considering the going rate for an hour long class is between $15-$20, this deal is really good.

My daughter (2.5) took classes with Claudia, owner of Baby Grand Studio. She holds her classes (won't start again until September) in the grassroots community space on Coles (and 3rd I think). She loved it, and I did too. We're definitely going back in September.

There also seem to be some other adult age classes held there by various teachers:

Boca Grande near the Newport PATH has Salsa lessons on Sunday nights. Piel Canela Dance School hosts them, there's no cover and margaritas are $4 during the lessons. I believe they start at 6pm.

Next Step Broadway is great. We enrolled our 4 yrs old daughter last fall and she loved it. The teachers and staff are great and we plan to re-enroll our daughter in the Fall again.

My daughter has been taking ballet and tap classes at Next Step Broadway for the last 3 years. She loves it and I feel she has got a lot out of it. They have a terrific new space with a friendly, knowledgeable staff and competitive prices.
This photo is of Amy, the owner, from their last recital and it really exemplifies Amy's commitment and the enjoyment she brings to her young dancers. She is reminding them all to smile before they take the stage.

I have spoken to the owners of Jersey City Dance Academy on West Side Avenue in the past and they were just super. I would definitely check them out:

I'd like to sign my daughter up for some dance lessons and was wondering if anyone had any experience with Next Step Broadway by Hamilton Park. Also, if there are other dance schools in the area worth looking into, please let me know.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fun, laid-back dance/gymnastics classes for little kids here in JC? My 2 1/2, almost 3 yr old, has tons of energy and loves to dance, but I don't necessarily want to commit her to anything intense just yet. For example, I'd rather not send her somewhere with "hair requirements", ie her hair must be pulled back tightly in a bun, blah, blah, blah. Just fun, energy-burning, silly time...Has anyone had any experience with The Little Gym? Thanks for the help!

There are several different types of salsa, and if you interested in dancing in the clubs, you would probably learn a style called "on 2", but if you are looking to just dance at a wedding or something, you could learn "ballroom". Learning ballrom salsa will not do you much good if you want to go out dancing in the clubs of ny. If you call around, you can ask what style they teach, any school will know what you mean (and if they don't - hang up!)!

Assuming (a) you want to dance in clubs and thus dance "on 2", and (b) you don't want to go to Manhattan to learn to dance (which is actually what I would recommend, as I am a semi-pro dancer), there are a few in the local area.

1. Caribbean Soul. Lead dancers are Ismael Otero and Shanai Talmor who are relatively big names in the salsa community. website: http://www.ismaelotero.com/

2. Salsa Fever on2. Lead dancer is Mario B. It takes a certain personality to get on with the teacher, but if you do, he can show you the moves. website: http://salsafeveron2.com/Home.html

There are many many more if you are willing to go a bit further, but those are the two closest and most renown salsa schools who will teach ny "NY STYLE ON 2". Kennedy dancers does NOT teach this style (at least last time I checked) - but this does not mean they aren't a great academy! If you want to learn ballroom, sorry I can't be much help!!!!!!

Here is a fairly comprehensive list:
http://www.salsanewyork.com/magazine/instructors/home.htm

Good luck!

Hey all.. does anyone know if there's a hidden dance studio somewhere here in downtown? I've searched around and can't seem to find anything (except for that Jazz Dance sign on Columbus, is that even open?). The nearest I found online was on West Side Avenue but frankly, I work and live in downtown and would rather try to stay down here.

I know Club H has classes so if anyone knows how they are, please inform.

Thanks all!

I am getting married next year and my fiancee and I would like to take dance lessons. We would start with ballroom and then decide if we attempt salsa (it all depends on his 2 left feet!)

I have looked and found Kennedy Dancers here in JC - they do have adult classes and seem pretty resonable in price. Does anyone know about Kennedy Dancers or any other place to recommend?

The spot JerseyGirl mentioned is always busy - and the dancers look like they're having a lot of fun! I never took classes here, but what a nice addition they are to the Heights neighborhood.

Does anyone know if there are any local dance schools or classes in Jersey City? A few of us are looking into schools who have a wide variety of classes such as Salsa, Mambo, Cha-Cha, Samba, ballroom dancing etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
