The Journal Square Farmers Market started today. It is open till 7 PM. I bought some blueberries, peaches, and broccoli.
Next week, because of Independence Day, it will be on Tuesday instead of Wednesday.

We are also trying to get an organic farm to join the market. I contacted Old Hook Farms that sells in Hoboken but they are booked for the season. If anyone knows of others, please PM me and I?ll give them a call. Thanks.

Is the farmer at VVP have local stuff? I am going to try to support locally grown farmer markets as much as possible. Any little thing that I can do to help is better then sitting on my ass doing nothing.

+1 and Amen to all you say here! Before I became virtually housebound I would do the same as you describe here, Union Square, Whole Foods (Chelsea Market came after my disability)and even 9th Ave Hell's Kitchen area plus China Town. Those days are over for me but I encourage everyone to support our Farmer's Market and Food Co-ops, irrespective of how limited they may be. We have to start somewhere> Just make sure the pickle people with those stuffed pickles and stuffed olives are back.

The three that I am aware of: HP, VVP, and Pavonia PATH are very limited - never saw fish, etc.
If you find shopping for food fun, you can "do" 14th street - The Union Square Market, Whole Foods and TJs all within a few blocks. I used to feel bad about taking a shopping cart on the PATH, but it is no worse than the strollers, so I do. If you are willing to venture further afield head to Chelsea Market (9th and 15th). My particular favorites there are the Italian Grocery for cheese and the greengrocer which is very reasonable. I guess that as weather warms up you have to purchase strategically to make sure nothing spoils - maybe buy fish last, etc. There is nothing nicer, for me, than shopping for a meal with someone I like, cooking together, and then fukcing our brains out - call me a homebody.

Heaven would be if we could get the Oldwick farms people, the organic guy and the bread lady from the Hoboken market. Those folks have really amazing stuff.

Forget Whole Foods - what about a farmer's market?

My friends who live in Manhattan have several farmer's markets to choose from and I am envious.
Fresh LI veggies, fresh scallops to die for, fish, fruit. All produce is local, so buying it helps the environment. Is there such a thing in JC or nearby?
