Another vote for Pecoraro's. Delicious breads, friendly, old-school service (and I have a crush on the lady who works behind the counter).

Cash only.

really? I guess I have the opposite experience. I haven't really found anyplace with great sweets. Choc o pain is great for what they sell but you can't get pastries or something for a birthday there (I guess you could give a croissant with a candle but its not the same even though they are delicious and I basically make that my splurge every week!). I would love more of an italian bakery/ pasty shop or a good cupcake place. I tried the cupcake salon (now gone) and its was eh, the one in hamilton park was good but its gone too and I find cocoa stuff to not really ever hit the mark for me (but I have only bought at the farmer market so maybe it gets a little stale etc out in the open)

Once home and cutting into the cake, it was dry beyond belief and in my opinion, over-sweetened. Will definitely be my last time patronizing their bakery.

I went to SBC this past weekend. I had a brownie and coffee, both okay. The space is wasted. They could have furniture and tables near the windows and another bench on the other side of the door. It doesn't look like much effort being put into the business. The whole inside is oddly laid out. So many weird displays etc..

Not sure about any other Wonder Bagels but the one on Danforth makes bread, baguettes and other breads on premises and its pretty good. Can't recall what the price are but its affordable.

Choc-o-pain IS great. But, if bread is what you are looking for, you can not do better than the 2nd Street Bakery. A loaf is $1.25 (!!) and always fresh. I pick one up at least once a week, and it is often still warm from the oven. Great taste, texture and crust. Their cinnamon bread is also insanely good (i think that goes for $2, or $2.50).

And Pecoraro's on Newark, and Elio's on West Side Avenue make very good bread.

I actually had a detailed conversation with someone who works for a competitor in the area (wanted to keep the name anonymous out of respect). Sounded like the owners of Sugartown only intended for the bakery to be a short prelude to their ultimate goal of procuring a liquor license. They likely figured "cakes and cupcakes? Easy!" to generate revenue until they can do something bar-oriented. Not sure how long this bakery business model will persist. Certainly, if business doesn't continue who knows if they'll be able to continue until the liquor license gets acquired/purchased. Not familiar with that process. Just the messenger, here. Not intimately familiar with the goings-on......

This place is a joke. They have stupid $10 cc minimum. My wife and kids wents there the other day. When she tried to pay, the guy at the register told her about the minimum. So she grabs a few more things, and the total comes out to something like $9.64. The guy gives her blank stare and says she's short. She walked out and went elsewhere. Bad way to do business.

I wish these bakeries baked things other than sweets, pastries, cakes, etc., like bread. I would patronize them on an almost daily basis if they made various types of bread. From a business perspective, i think it would be a no-brainer.

Hate to trash a place trying to make a go of it, but I had a pretty bad experience there and don't plan on going back. Especially with Cocoa and Choc-o-pain right in the neighborhood.

My experience there was hideous. We purchased a half dozen whoopie pies. They were hard as rocks. The icing in the middle was crumbling. 100% inedible. But we were already at a friend's house for dinner, so we were out dessert and weren't interested in any replacement.

Turns out, they'd held some sort of Whoopie Pie celebration earlier in the week - like four or five days before we bought ours. They were likely leftovers.

Thankfully there are a couple of bakeries very near by (on Jersey and on Grand) who make fresh items.
