I have the same question as dcj back in this thread...

The large, old cherry tree in front of my house has a white fungus growing along some of the branches.

I have seen some of the 'tree work' perpetrated by the city and so am rather cautious about calling them. Can anyone reassure me? Does the city have arborists who will come and look at it?

Who is responsible for the upkeep of a tree on the sidewalk in front of my house, me or the city?

I can prune the worst impacted branches, but it seems to be into one of the main boughs also. Is there any 'medicine' I can buy?

Any amateur arborists in the neighborhood want to take a look and assist - its at 235 Eighth Street two doors down from Basic.

Robin.

Yes, you can request it here:
http://mygovhelpadmin.com/JERSEYCITYN ... .aspx?ssessionid=&rqst=38

Just so you know, it took them about 4 months to trim the tree outside our place; they said that's because they schedule the trimmings based on urgency, not on the order in which requests come in.

Also, when they eventually trimmed the tree, they didn't trim it enough, so I would recommend being home while they do it, if possible.

Call JC Parks & Forestry about the streetside trees, they'll do it for free.

We need two different projects done
1) Get 2 trees in the front of our house trimmed so that the branches don't overhang the sidewalk or touch the house (might also have company look at trees in the back yard to see if they should be cut as well.)

2) A totally decrepit free-standing "garage" in the back yard has to be torn down and the debris carted away.

Recommendations anyone?

I called all the tree services that had been given good feedback on JC List. The only ones that even returned my call were Bob - Hamilton Tree Company and Reliable. Reliable made an appointment to come look at the job (extensive pruning on a huge maple in my neighbor's yard that we'd both agreed to cooperate on trimming). They not only never showed up, but didn't even bother to return my repeated calls. Not so reliable after all.

Bob did the job. He not only showed up when he said he would, but took great care with the tree, carefully brought them out through our house (the only way out) cut up all the branches and stacked all the wood. He's a great guy and I highly recommend him. Hamilton Tree Company - 201 572-3055.

If the city takes their sweet time get a letter from your insurance with their letter head on it to speed up the process. The city reacts quickly with that kind of clout. And by the way the Parks & Forestry director Rodney Hadley is now the Department head of the DPW which houses the Parks division.

curious if the city contacted you before they came out or during. i've been thinking of calling them about a tree in front of my house but concerned they'll just chop it down for some stupid reason.

I put my request in online sometime in early September for the tree in front of my house to be trimmed. 4 months later, I come home from work and notice I can see my upstairs windows from across the street....the job was done! JC seemed to do a really good job and the clean-up was thorough...and the cost was FREE.

in reference to your neighbors trees: I dont know how agile/capable you are but you could always see if you could do it yourself and save yourself the inevitable bureaucratic hoops you will no doubt need to jump through.

If the tree is on the sidewalk call the J.C. (DPW) Div. Parks & Forestry (201) 547-4449. If it is on your neighbor's property then either call the J.C. Housing Code Authority (201) 547-4825 or you can trim it yourself if the branches are hanging over your property line.

Happy Tuesday!!

I don't know where to post this, so I thought here would suffice...

My neighborS' seriously both sides AND another house 2 doors down) backyard trees are extremely overgrown and touching my house. I have also had to have my roof/skylights fixed because twigs and leaves from these trees are falling on my roof -- has anyone dealt with this and have any suggestions on how to address this?

My neighbors are older and been living there a long time so I don't know if they have the $$ to trim/cut their trees if I asked them. I don't mind contributing toward the cost (but really don't want to because these are NOT my trees), so I would love to avoid having to shell out the money.

Does JC have a department that I could call to assist?

Also, the tree in front of my house (on the sidewalk) is also overgrown..anyone know if this a JC or ForF(i.e. my)problem....

Thanks!

i'm thinking of calling the city to trim a tree in front of my house but i'm slightly apprehensive because i'm afraid they may chop the whole thing down if they find it has some minor fungus or something. is this a legitimate concern? does anyone know if the parks dept overreacts?

I recently learned that Parks & Forestry will trim any street tree for free, just call them. This is REALLY IMPORTANT for those young trees we all had planted, since some A-hole trucker will inevitably try to park under your tree and break off large chunks of it unless you have those low branches over the street pruned. This was fatal to our pear planted over a decade ago. A P&F guy also told me it was a huge mistake for the city to plant all those flowering cherries, since they grow low and wide, completely wrong for streetside trees.

I"m crazy busy and strained my back, and pruning time is near for my 3 peach trees. I'd like to find someone to do it for me, but my experience with the local "landscaper" type guys under trees in the book is not inspiring, you have to know what you're doing or there won't be any fruit this year. Pruning a fruit tree isn't the same as an oak or maple. It took 3 years for them to recover from the last time I paid someone to prune them.

Anyone got ideas?

I used Martin's Tree Service last year. Found him out of the yellow pages. He came right a way and was ready to work there and then. Took a dead sumac off of another tree it had fused with for $200 (without removing the debris - I did that myself). It wasn't a huge tree but it seemed like a decent price.

Reliable Tree Service

Ed Hufnagel and his son Mike run a large operation with multiple trucks and at least a couple different crews. Ed, Mike, and a 3rd employee are all both NJ Certified Tree Experts and ISA Certified Arborists. They do what they are told, work quickly, and don't leave a mess. My only complaint is their popularity can make them hard to reach. The phone always goes straight to voice mail, but they usually call back within a day.

If you are not in a hurry, Bob at Hamilton Tree Co. does a great job and is reasonable. He is also authorized to do work for the city. 201 572-3055, tell him Marc from VVP sent you.

Hi,

We've got a huge cherry tree in our backyard (near Hamilton Park) that could use a good trim. Is there anyone who can recommend a good (and reasonably priced) tree service?

Thanks,

-- mark

I would highly recommended Hamilton Tree Company - 201 572-3055, ask for Bob. He did a great job for us in VVP last year by reducing the canopy of all the trees in the park and by removing a few dangerous ones. Good pricing, you just need to be able to work within his schedule.

I used Kelly's Tree Service last year and they were prompt in responding to my phone call, and fast/clean in taking down 5 trees in my backyard in Hamilton Park area. The price was very reasonable, as well.

There number is 201-436-9501 and cell phone 201-980-5724. They give free estimates and are fully insured. I even checked with their insurance company and I think the coverage was a million or two.

Good luck.

Hi Jclisters...

I have an out-of-control Elm tree in my back yard in downtown JC that I would like to get trimmed. I have been looking for someone to do it all summer and have had no luck getting someone willing to come to downtown JC. Any suggestions out there?

Thanks, help is much appreciated!
