Traffic light cameras not only read plates but are hooked up to facial recognition system.

JCPA license plate readers also store information - not a big deal

Thanks to the ACLU, I just learned that out of a million "plate reads" only "an average of 47 are connected to a serious crime: a stolen vehicle, a wanted person, etc."

Five years seems like a long time for our fair city to retain our driving histories. Perhaps our new administration could tighten this up?

Interesting slideshow.

Well, if you are in Manhattan, and want to walk around and avoid being captured/watched/seen in surveillance cameras, you can use iSee to map your walk while avoiding those pesky CCTV cameras.

why don't they have these cameras, or more of them where the shootings in JC are happening? is it because it doesn't have the potential to generate revenue? this is freakin horseshit, tracking everyone instead of concentrating the technology on places where it is most useful Quote:
MDM wrote: ... this might be as bad or worse... http://news.yahoo.com/driving-somewhe ... ovt-record-140052644.html WASHINGTON (AP) ? Chances are, your local or state police departments have photographs of your car in their files, noting where you were driving on a particular day, even if you never did anything wrong. Using automated scanners, law enforcement agencies across the country have amassed millions of digital records on the location and movement of every vehicle with a license plate, according to a study published Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union. The JCPD has the system as well... But even if law enforcement officials say they don't want a public location tracking system, the records add up quickly. In Jersey City, N.J., for example, the population is only 250,000 but the city collected more than 2 million plate images on file. Because the city keeps records for five years, the ACLU estimates that it has some 10 million on file, making it possible for police to plot the movements of most residents depending upon the number and location of the scanners, according to the ACLU.

And yet, whenever a kid goes missing, they have to rely on the eyes and ears of the public via Amber Alerts. You'd think with all the cameras and surveillance, they could track down the child in no time.

On a similar thread, if anyone is surprised or shocked by Mr Edward Snowden's NSA/Prism relevations, then they're too ignorant.

I bet the government is going a WHOLE LOT more than even what Mr Snowden knows/reveals.

Oh, can I get photos of dogs off leashes and post them here?

This just shows that if they wanted to enforce a traffic law such as "no getting off the turnpike at 14B and using local streets to the tunnel", it would be easy. Just have a 1 hr period after exiting where you'd get a ticket for using the tunnel.
