Two more Jersey City men charged in stabbing at Newport Centre Mall

Thursday, January 05, 2012, 5:10 PM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

This incident is the "Jordan Shoe" stabbing on Dec. 22, 2011 at 10:19pm at the Newport Mall just outside the "Children's Place" on Level one. The police department is seeking the public's assistance in identifying the two individuals depicted. The gray hooded, light skin Hispanic male, approximately 18 years of age, who is depicted on the left is the suspect in the stabbing. The blue hooded, medium skin Hispanic male, approximately 18 years of age is a potential witness and seen on the right in the photographs.

Two more Jersey City men have been charged in the case of a man police say was stabbed seven times by fellow Christmas shopper while he waited in line to buy the coveted new Nike Air Jordan sneakers at the Newport Centre Mall on Dec. 22.

Juan Velez, 19, of Woodlawn Avenue, was arrested in a West New York restaurant at 11 p.m. yesterday and Hansi Rodriguez, 19, of Halladay Street, turned himself several hours earlier, police said.

Richel Polanco, 19, of Bergen Avenue near Ege Avenue, was arrested before noon yesterday and all are charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and weapons offenses, Jersey City Police Capt. Michael Kelly said.

Their bails were set at $35,000 cash or bond when they made their first court appearance on the charges in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City this afternoon via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny.

Velez was additionally charged with resisting arrest and aggravated assault on a police officer, Kelly said. The criminal complaint says Velez ran away when police tried to arrest him and while attempting to flee he pushed a police officer who suffered an injury.

Tips led to the identification of Polanco and Rodriguez after frames from mall security video ran in The Jersey Journal on Saturday. Interviews and the ongoing investigation led to Velez's arrest, Kelly said.

"You can clearly see in the video that I had no weapon," Rodriguez said in court today. But the public defender responded saying, "The victim was stabbed seven times...and unfortunately the incident is on video." He advised Polanco to exercise his right to remain silent.
When police arrived at the mall after the 10:19 p.m. incident they found the 20-year-old victim outside the building, sitting in a puddle of blood and drifting in and out of consciousness, reports said.

The Duncan Avenue man was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where it was determined he had been stabbed seven times, reports said, adding that the wounds were not life-threatening.

At the hospital, the victim told police he was in line to buy the Nike Air Jordan XI Concords at Foot Locker inside the mall when he got into an argument with another man, reports said. He said that when they began to fight, four to six others men joined the attack on the victim, reports said.

The Duncan Avenue man said he thought he was being punched but realized he was being stabbed with knives, reports said.

Police originally believed the victim had gotten into a fight with a man who was also in line to buy sneakers. Today, Kelly said the victim had an argument with one of those arrested elsewhere in the mall and that led to the incident that happened while he was in line.
The victim would not tell police what the earlier confrontation was about.

Rodriguez is not an American citizen and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement will be notified of his arrest.

Jersey City police release photos of suspect in Air Jordan stabbing at Newport Centre Mall

Saturday, December 31, 2011, 1:12 PM
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Authorities are looking for the Hispanic male in the gray-hooded shirt in connection with the Dec. 22 stabbing. The person in the blue-hooded shirt to his right is considered a potential witness.

Police have released images of a man thought to have stabbed a fellow Christmas shopper while both waited in line to buy coveted new Nike Air Jordan sneakers in Jersey City?s Newport Centre Mall on Dec. 22.

When police arrived at the mall after the 10:19 p.m. incident, they found the 20-year-old victim outside the building, sitting in a puddle of blood and drifting in and out of consciousness, reports said.

The Duncan Avenue man was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where it was determined he had been stabbed seven times, reports said, adding that the wounds were not life-threatening.

At the hospital, the victim told police that he was in line to buy the Nike Air Jordan XI Concords at Foot Locker inside the mall when he got into an argument with another man in line, reports said. When they began to fight, four to six other men joined the attack on the victim, reports said.

The Duncan Avenue man said he thought he was being punched but realized he was being stabbed with knives, reports said.

The victim was stabbed in the back, shoulder, leg and arm, but he managed to get away, staggered out of the mall and collapsed near the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail station, reports said.

The man being sought by police is about 18 years old and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, police said. Anyone with information on his identity is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

Off the original topic, but for those interested in the Nike cost of manufacturing and sweatshop abuse:

What's sad is that the markup/margin on the shoes on ebay vs. the retail purchase is probably near equal to what Nike makes on the retail sale... due to who and where they make the shoes.
btw - it's not Nike's fault that people act like assholes when these go one sale.

What's sad is the mark up itself. $180 for a pair of Chinese made sneakers that probably cost Nike $5 a pair to produce. And it is somewhat Nike's fault with all of their marketing research on product usage and patterns of the end consumer. They spend a large amount of money and time on these studies. It is all for publicity it adds to the excitement of the product.

I guarantee there are supplier agreements that prevent shoes like this one from being an 'internet only sale.'

Each one of those guys that jumped that guy was packing a knife, and they weren't even together at the time. It was just a free for all mentality.

Everyone should call NIKE and complain. GANG Violence should not be tolerated.

How do I contact Nike for service in the United States?

Please contact Nike USA Consumer Affairs at 1-800-344-6453 (Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 4pm Pacific Time) for assistance in the USA.

Tell them Corporate Profits are not worth having people stabbed when trying to get their products.

If you have a product launch and it gets violent that company should be fined and prohibited from future product launches cause the bring Gang violence with it.

FG

Shopper stabbed in Jersey City mall while waiting for new Nike Air Jordan XI Concord sneakers to go on sale

A shopper at the Newport Centre mall in Jersey City last night was stabbed during a fight while on line to buy the new Nike Air Jordan XI Concord sneakers, police said.

A 20-year-old Jersey City man was stabbed seven times last night during a fight among several of the 300 holiday shoppers lined up to buy the coveted Nike Air Jordan XI Concord sneakers at the Newport Centre Mall, police said.

The Duncan Avenue man, attacked at about 10:19 p.m., suffered non-life-threatening wounds, police said.

When police arrived at the mall, they found the victim outside, drifting in and out of consciousness and leaning against a concrete column in a puddle of blood, reports said.

At the Jersey City Medical Center, the victim told police he was in the line to buy the sneakers at a Footlocker inside the mall and was in front of the Children's Place when he got into an argument with another man in line, reports said. When the two began to fight, four to six other men joined the attack, reports said.

The man said he thought he was being punched but realized he was being stabbed with knives, reports said. He managed to get away, staggered out of the mall and collapsed near the Hudson-Bergen light rail station, reports said.

The victim described his attackers as being in their late teens, reports said. Police said they found numerous blood trails, adding that the victim was stabbed in the back, shoulder, leg and arm.

The sneakers, last released five years ago, went on sale at midnight and are copies of the shoes Michael Jordan wore during his 1994-'96 comeback. They retail for $180 for men's sizes; $120 for kids' sizes.

Anyone with information on the stabbing is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.

1010wins gave me the explanation this morning. New air jordan 11's went on midnight release sale. Mini riot at the staten island mall last night amongst other silliness.

I was at the Newport Mall yesterday evening tons of teens and twenty somethings rallying around in a snake like fashion similar to the suburban mall rats of the 80's. I also heard it was for a special pair of sneakers and some new game cartridge. Boy they got them under a spell.

Maybe a stabbing? There were 2 cop cars parked on Washington with lights flashing and one lone cop on foot directing pedestrians around the scene. I suppose there will be a story in the papers tomorrow.

Yea I over heard a cop say their were like 5 robberies and a stabbing related to the release of the new Jordans at midnight. I think a cop from either Union City or JC got cut responding to an armed robbery tonight and I over heard him mention it.
