Re: Union Republic -- Impressive New Place on Newark Ave @ Third Street

Home away from home

I visited two weeks ago to try out their coffee and desserts. I ordered a slice of the chocolate banana bread pudding. It was INCREDIBLE. I also had a cup of coffee and was very, very happy with its taste. The best part is that, despite what little I ordered, the staff was SUPER friendly and welcoming. I will be going back to try out the other food. Already, this place is a winner on my book based solely on the bread pudding and the staff friendliness and service.

Paying for wireless hot spots that will likely not see much use from the end users is a silly tack. Myopic, even. Lots of companies throw up wifi hotspots that are free of charge, or supported by some advertisement. Why would NJT partner up with Cablevision on this? I suppose they are getting a cut of the action. I wish we would get WiFi in the PATH stations, though.

Exactly. It was an agreement with the state of NJ. Amazon would start charging state sales taxes on July 1, 2013 in exchange for some incentives to build a local warehouse.

Thank you for the link. Another odd occurrence (albeit not at all common) is that sometimes I get mail that has OBVIOUSLY been opened. I am not accusing the mailman of opening my letters, but I think it is super weird to get envelopes that show signs of being tampered with, or which have been opened. This happens a few times per year. Anyone else having these issues?

Re: Jury duty questions
Home away from home
Home away from home

You don't leave your belongings in the jury pool waiting area. You bring your belongings with you to the assigned courtroom.

Inside that courtroom, you sit on benches until you are called forward for voire dire. If you are selected to be part of a jury, and once the jury is fully empaneled, you and your fellow jurors will be ushered into a small room inside the courtroom. That's the jury room where you report every morning, where you are sent when the judge and lawyers need to have conversations to which you should not be privy, and where you will carry out deliberations. You leave your bags and belongings inside this room. The room is protected by the court room bailiff, who stands next to its entrance in full view of all jurors, and courtroom participants. You are allowed to use your computer and devices while the court is NOT in session or whenever you are sent to the room.

I hope I provided enough details/information. If you have any more questions, let me know.

Same experience as I_heart_JC.

Making matters worse: showing up at the Bergen Avenue location, to pick up the package for which a slip was left, and being told they can't find it.

After asking the lady to check again, she miraculously finds it during her second check.

As the song goes: "something ain't right"

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)
Home away from home
Home away from home

Personally, I have resorted to changing my commuting times/routes to avoid the PATH debacle. I am lucky enough that my schedule allows for that so, when I do take the PATH, I take a later train (after 9:30) and in the evenings I ride back to HOB and from there a bike ride back to my place. If I was a Newport resident, or anywhere along the waterfront, I would definitely ride the HOB train and walk home (even during the Winter months!) as the HOB trains are mostly empty (always a seat available). The 33rd-JSQ situation is almost unbearable at times, and it is only a matter of time before some serious fights start breaking out. I have seen some tense exchanges already.

Also, could people PLEASE STOP BRINGING coffee (and, food) into the trains!? Why is it that some yuppies think it is wrong for people to eat in the PATH, but then feel perfectly fine bringing in their Starbucks and DD coffees into the train?? So often you find seats on which coffee has been spilled, or train cars soiled by spills that, invariably, get strewn by the jerking train motions. All it takes is one unexpected motion and your precious coffee can ruin someone else's morning (who wants to go to work dirtied by coffee? Or, worse, burned by it?)

Just to correct the poster two before: the correct site is usps.com, not usps.org.

To get your mail redelivered, go to USPS :: Schedule a Redelivery.

There is an epic thread in JCLIST about the horrendous mail service in our city. If you search for it, you will realize that the comment about getting a slip is indeed something to be happy about and celebrate. I have had packages sent back with nary a slip left, and more than once have received "LAST NOTICE" slips when none had been left before. In short, we have atrocious mail service in town. Unfortunate, because the US Postal Service is a truly outstanding operation and my experience in other cities and states has been consistently good, sometimes even amazing.

Nothing wrong with that spot. But, plenty wrong with the various executions. Over the past seven years, the only place to get it right was MAE.

Sadly, this is the Torch House summary: lack of focus, over priced menu, lack of character.

Indeed, $150/hr is very, very low for attorney services. Too low, actually. I am surprised to hear about that rate.

Based on my experience with firms, they will assign several associates to this project, with one or two partners supervising. So, really, you will have several attorneys working this case, all billing full days, at the same time. If each attorney bills 50 hrs/week, that's $7,500 per week, per attorney. If more than three are working this case, that $50,000 could be easily spent in less than two weeks. The council will be busy renewing these $50,000 agreements every other week!

Re: Color printing in downtown

Staples provides many ways to accomplish this. The cheapest way, surprisingly, is to have your document on Dropbox. You can then connect to your account from a littler terminal attached to the self help printers and you can print a color copy for very cheap. I have done this before at other locations and was very satisfied with the entire process. Using your own computer, or USB stick, was actually MORE expensive than uploading the doc to Dropbox.

Here is a link to a description of the service: Staples Copy and Print Services

There is a Staples over in Newport, next to Modell's.

Re: Two ZIP codes in Jersey City —07302 and 07310— identified as Super Zips
Home away from home
Home away from home

I am confused by this article. In the second paragraph, it states that:
Quote:

Locations that rank a 95 or higher were labeled Super Zips.

but in the fourth paragraph, it says that:
Quote:

Two ZIP codes in Jersey City ?07302 and 07310? were also identified as Super Zips, with rankings of 94 and 99, respectively.

What was the cutoff to be classified as a "Super Zip"?? Looking at the map, 07302 was NOT identified as a "Super Zip", which are denoted in yellow (07302 is a light green) and the stats for the zip code (household income: $89,287, adults that hold college degrees: 67%) are below those of the Super Zip average ($120,272 / 68%). The college degree difference is minimal, but the average income difference is pretty steep: 25% lower.

Why would the article writer make a false claim? Are editors (and, reporters) at NJ.com not concerned with accuracy?

Re: Broker's fee

My experience has been different. That is, I have come across more and better options when searching the "New Jersey" section of Craigslist New York. Here is the link: Craigslist NY - NJ section. I think this section may include more "for rent by owner" because some (many?) of these owners are "investors" that live in NYC. Of course, I could be totally wrong about that. But, without a doubt, whenever I look in Craigslist, I find more and better options this way. YMMV.

Second Street Bakery has the best bread around. I usually bake my own at home, but when in a pinch, or in a hurry, there is nothing better. And, their prices are ridiculously good.

I have never thought to go there for a breakfast sandwich, but I may just have to try this place later this week. Thanks for the information!

Oh, for Pete's sake, can we just wish this kid well in his life?

Yes, we could. And, I don't think anyone in here is doing the opposite. But, honestly, what's the point of celebrating sub-par performance? Why can't today's kids be told that they lost, that they fell short, or that their best is still not that great? The mentality that kids need to be coddled to the point where even sub-par performances are celebrated is, in my opinion, a huge reason why we are starting to lag in so many respects. Tell kids the truth: you lost the game? Train harder and play better next time. You test scores weren't high enough? Study harder next time.

Is it any surprise that young adults entering the workplace are baffled when they find out they don't measure up? Their entire life (even through college!) they are constantly told they are great, and have never actually lost at anything. Please. That ain't real life.

PS: +1 to what Brewster said. Perhaps we should be encouraging teens to carefully weigh their future and not just to follow their "dreams".

Re: Electric Tankless Water Heater

I don't have a tankless water heater, but know someone that does, and they SWEAR by it. What I have heard is that it provides near instant hot water, without the risk of a tank leaking, or flooding your place, and it saves quite a bit on electrical bills.

Since I don't personally own one such water heater, take this as nothing more than hearsay and poppycock. :)

But, seriously, I have heard good things about them. Someone else might have first hand knowledge and be able to chime in more authoritatively.

No one is claiming that people are confused about who is president. My statement "improper use of protocol by the media has led to confusion among the populace" is meant to convey that people are confused about the proper way to address a former president. Are you really that dense?

And, yes, it is "only" etiquette and protocol, but these things do matter in some occasions.

Re: Dinner with Bill Clinton in Jersey City - $2500.00

Actually, the proper protocol is for Bill Clinton to be referred to as "The Honorable William J. Clinton" or "The Honorable William Jefferson Clinton". In conversation, he should be referred to as "Mr. Clinton". If you wish to include a reference to his former status as president, you can add that after his name, like this: "42nd President of the United States" or "President of the United States, 1993 - 2001"

There is only one person that can hold the title of "Mr. President" at any one time, which is why it is improper to use the title when referring to former presidents. The same goes for Mayor, Governor, etc. Senators, Secretaries, Representatives, Assemblymen, etc. are titles held by many at any one time, at the same level, which is why it is OK to use those titles when referring to former holders (such as, Madame Secretary, when referring to Hillary Clinton.)

Unfortunately, improper use of protocol by the media has led to confusion among the populace.

Not to mention that she was already corrected on the proper use of Roman numerals in another thread, but she insists on using sequences of "1" in their place. The kicker is that, in the same thread, she quoted an article that clearly shows she was in error.

People like Yvonne would be better served by dialing back their vitriol and actually listening, even if briefly, to what others have to say. Their myopic approach turns people off, and results in their message being tuned out.

Hmmm. Similar situation this morning as I was on my daily morning run. As I was getting into LSP, another clueless driver blew through the STOP sign just as I am running on the crosswalk near the corner of Phillips St and Audrey Zapp Rd./Johnston Ave. This is a narrow two-lane road, and the woman did not see me until I was inches from her car staring at her through the driver's side window. I have had SO MANY close calls in the park. All these a-holes rushing through the park roads are a menace to pedestrians and runners. I really, really wish for enforcement of the speed limit and posted signs.

What recourse do I have beyond yelling expletives at these clueless drivers? Surely, punching their doors or windows can't be our only relief. Sooner or later, someone will get injured or seriously hurt.

Armchair quarterbacking, based on conjectures, not facts. Unless said programmers had direct access to the server-side code (which means they were actually part of the development process and, thus, part of the problem) then they are just spouting FUD.

How could a "programmer" claim "serious programming flaws" without seeing the code? That would be like claiming that a highly anticipated book was hard to come by upon release because of bad writing.

I also prefer to pump my own gas, and for many of the same reasons some have stated. But here is another: my car has one of those systems that detects if the cap is on, or not, and it should never be over-tightened. It drives me crazy to be sitting in my car and to hear the attendant twisting that cap while it keeps clicking and clicking away indicating it is already secure.

The top-offs are an issue, and I vaguely remember a PSA campaign (may have been elsewhere, or maybe it was a national campaign, can't recall) encouraging people NOT to top off, as it led to waste, etc.
