Re: NJ W2 Tax Question

I went back into my tax records for 2013 and compared the NYS taxable income vs. the NJ taxable income. Our NJ taxable salaries were higher for the following 3 pre-tax deductions from our salaries:

Pre-tax Medical Flexible Spending Account (FSA) contributions
Pre-tax commuting cost contributions (Wageworks)
Pre-tax medical insurance premium payments

For filing your NJ state taxes NJ includes the above contributions as part of your taxable salary. You then can deduct your FSA contributions and medical insurance premium payments as part of your NJ state itemized deductions along with your mortgage interest and property taxes and so forth.

Our 401k contributions were treated equally by NJ and NY so that did not factor into the difference.

Part of the confusion here may be that FSA contributions are not deductible on NJ income taxes (they are for NY residents). In effect, your NJ taxable income is higher than the amount considered taxable in NY.

Agreed, and DTJC has moved beyond needing status symbols. We've skipped past gentrification and we're on our way to full-bore pretentious d-baggery.

People use that walkway? Whenever I go by it I think, "oh, how convenient for the rapists".

I'm with the non-naysayers on this. It won't win any awards, but the building itself is pretty inoffensive. I'm more concerned with what occupies the street level - and somehow I won't be surprised if it includes a bank, a real estate office or a Starbucks.

I'm guessing this is a joke, or some kind of abstract question?

They're homeless people, dude. And a lot of them undoubtedly have substance problems. Can I explain anything else to you?

Sure, the builders and municipalities have a responsibility, but individuals do, too - they could educate themselves about the construction of a building they're considering. It's not rocket science, it's some basic questions. Don't rent a place just because it has a heated pool.

I'm with you. The building I live in isn't the nicest/newest place in town, but it's built like a nuclear bunker. I've driven past that Edgewater complex and thought that exactly this could happen. Life lesson: Stay away from wood construction in multi-family housing.

All that said, I feel terrible for those people.

Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City

Home away from home

From Uberpeople.net, a driver forum. Don't know where this guy is from, but it's headed "Dear Uber Customers":

I hope you are feeling really good about your cheap Uber rides. After all they are cheap only because the driver is being exploited. Like in a sweat shop, only here Uber driver brings his own car and gas to serve you. I think bus fare is more expensive now. Yet you are still not reaching for some cash to give to this exploited driver. Feels good, you saved some money at someone's expense, now you can get another $6 latte and tip the barrista. Why not? The trip to the airport you paid $40 when you took a cab is now only $14 bucks. Yeah. Feels good. The nice driver loaded and unloaded your heavy ass luggage. Oh, sorry, I forgot - you did tip him. You promised to give him five fucking stars. Have you checked the driver's seat? I seriously doubt a four year old drove you to the airport. So stop treating these hard working adults like kindergarten kids and use promissory note that you will give him five fucking stars. Maybe you will maybe you won't. Who cares?! Tip him!!! With real cash so he can
feed his family without resorting to EBT!!!! Stop using the excuse that tip is included. I mean really? What part of the 0.70/mile do you think is a "tip"??? Grow up and stop exploiting the drivers. Tip your drivers!!!

What I find most amazing about this thread is that people still buy magazines.

Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City

well....maybe. There are a bunch of online forums for Uber drivers, and lots of complaints about the way Uber over-recruits in a region to improve response times. They've also cut pricing in lots of areas to get new customers, and most of the cuts come out of the drivers' pockets. The sunnier picture you get from your drivers may reflect a fear that you're a secret shopper paid by the company.

All that said, I love Uber. I hardly ever carry cash, but I'm going to start tipping a few bucks when I can.

I stopped in for a latte. Really friendly owners, a really pleasant space. I think they'll do a great business, especially once the Eataly wanna-be opens up.

Just what they said, it's the tunnels. I'm a frequent RVL rider, and the one-seat trips are currently scheduled only during off-peak times. Skipping that Newark Penn transfer is awesome...but alas, the tunnel limitations are what they are. And future-candidate Christy killed the chance of a new tunnel.

Great topic, but does it have anything to do with Jersey City?

I'm pretty sure JC cabs don't have plexiglass, but I could be wrong - I abandoned those deathtraps for Uber a while ago.

That aside, yeah - I just can't see how this story makes any sense.

Yeah, Sharia isn't just the thing that the crazies invoke as an excuse to kill people. It's a broad term...from Wikipedia, a source we can all rely on:

"Sharia (Islamic law) deals with many topics addressed by secular law, including crime, politics, and economics, as well as personal matters such as sexual intercourse, hygiene, diet, prayer, everyday etiquette and fasting."

I work for a company that does business in the Middle East, and we set up a separate subsidiary that complies with Sharia law (for example, it doesn't charge interest for loans to clients).

I had a reputable guy (not local, sorry) look at a similar problem, and he quoted $400 to repair it. I got a new one for $205. So unfortunately for our throw-away society, what you've heard is correct.

When you connect said removal of lions to an act of "jihad" (please inform yourself about what this word REALLY means); or condemn all the good citizens of a mosque in Jersey City as being complicit and accepting of acts of worldwide, cultural-based violence; or view congregants who worship God under an umbrella of suspicion just because they are Muslim, then yes, you're a bigot.

Well said. There seem to be two conversations going on: those (like Yvonne) who have a genuine concern about saving a historic JC artifact, and some others who go full-tilt batnuts crazy whenever the words Islam, Moslem or mosque are uttered.

Nobody loves historic structures more than me, but linking the murders in Israel to some building renovations in Jersey City is a bit over the top. As usual around here, a little perpective is in order.

I hope you're right about La Conguita. There's hardly ever anyone in there, but they make a great cafe con leche and tostada; almost as good as every little joint in Miami. And yes, my culinary tastes run to coffee and toast.

Did anyone really think the EWR PATH connection was ever really going to happen? It was just a ploy to divert attention and throw a few bucks to consultants. The PA can't get out of its own way, they aren't going to build a multi-billion, unnecessary, money-losing train line.

Don't all your examples - and lots of other examples of people doing hideous things in the name of religion - just prove that no religion has an exclusive on bad actors? There are lots of Muslims who have done horrible things; there are also lots of Muslims who sincerely believe in the teachings of the faith and want to live good, peaceful lives. Does the former group invalidate the latter group?

I don't agree with you too often, but this time you're spot on. Not pointing at any individuals, but I suspect a lot of the same people who crow about their "luxury" apartments are aghast at the price of pasta.
