As someone who worked at LCCS for 10 years until June 2016, I can not think of a time when that was true at all.

I don't think JCPS have an official recess policy. And if they do, it's not easy to find it anywhere in the JCBOE documents.
We at TECCS have a written policy available http://teccsjc.org/recess-policy Parents worked with the school to implement it, and now the school and FSA (Family School Association) provide funds for a chaperone to escort kids to the park. I am a parent at TECCS and I am very happy we are heard. And if you are interested in our school, don't hesitate to ask! http://www.teccsjc.org/admissions

they don't get enough recess. Teachers/Administrators view it as a hassle (accidents, falls, etc) and as such do the bare minimum to get the kids out.
Our experience was that kids couldn't go out until after every kid had finished their lunch. This drove me crazy as it penalized kids who ate quickly so they could get outside and run around. Every study under the sun shows that longer recess correlates to better classroom focus/test scores/etc...

In JC the length of a recess is inversely proportional to the graduation rate. I live 2 blocks away from Ferris HS.

Yvonne, not sure if your reply was in response to mine. I was just saying I don't think a playground is necessary. I think recess is absolutely necessary for children, and I feel like it's getting shorter and shorter. :(

Take a walk around the noon time hour by Dickinson H.S. and you'll see what recess is...it's Blackboard Jungle style. Plenty of exercise though.

I always thought it nasty that public and Catholic schools could get streets closed for recess, but LCCS couldn't get the Belmont loop closed for their recess. It would have been perfect, it's already a park! Word was it's a county road and the Sheriff refused.

I disagree, as a retired teacher, students need recess. They need to run, hit a ball and have fun. Recess is a necessity. You go to NYC and the Catholic schools have the street block for recess and students run around. I am not sure what the public schools do.

I moved next to Cordero School. I'm not sure how long their recess it, but it seems to just be a bunch of kids running around on the sidewalk. They have a couple of balls to play with, but no playground or anything. Honestly, I don't think they're necessary. My elementary school didn't get a playground until I was 10 and our creative minds took over. As long they can run around and play, socialize, get their energy out it works. It's not gym class. I wish kids got more time to play now a days. That's how they learn how the world works. It makes it easier to focus on their lessons when they are in class.

I don't know about JC, but when my kids went to public school in Bayonne, they had 15-20 minutes of recess after lunch in a paved parking lot. The kids were punished if they dared run or do any physical activity beyond standing and talking.

Does anyone know what's the current recess policies in JC schools? How long are they, how frequent, how much physical activity is allowed?
