There's nothing in the article to indicate McCann broke any laws - and wasn't simply doing his job. The JCIA's existence is the real story.

I'm not a cop, but I would suspect that a JCIA officer does not have any authority to get into a vehicle pursuit with a potential (not even proven by any means rather than "a hunch") violation suspect (that, if proven, would have ended up with a summons).

The news account indicates that McCann was in a Toyota - was the car even marked? Did he identify himself? Does he have the same powers as a LEO?

This hot-head pursued a guy in an unmarked vehicle through city streets - extremely dangerous and over the top.

Agree. Also - small point - McCann works for the city (JCIA), not the county.

Yeahhhh, you're right. I should have known better to use the word "astonished." I just thought this guy was out of the picture already. I didn't realize he was working on his pension so diligently.

Former Mayor Gerry McCann's attempt to cite a construction worker for allegedly transporting debris illegally turned into something out of a "Cops" episode this afternoon.

McCann, an inspector for the Jersey City Incinerator Authority, told The Jersey Journal he attempted to give the man a summons, but the man gave chase, and eventually landed behind bars after police say he trespassed in two different homes while trying to escape the ex-mayor.

Of course McCann gave chase - then he asked for a police pension at the end of the chase.
