There are two lists.
One list of traditional, authentic, possibly ethnic, possibly divey, standbys that are excellent: - Taqueria (tacos, Cali-Mex) - Sava (Polish) - 2nd Street Bakery (Italian) - Madame Claude's (French) - The Barge Inn (Italian) - Presto's (Italian) - Saigon Cafe (Vietnamese) - Ibby's (Middle Eastern) - Gypsy Grill (Middle Eastern) The second list is a new breed of restaurant for JC. Some of these restaurants have had articles written about them, and are noteworthy for creative, top notch cuisine. Trendier vibe than the first list: - Satis - 30 Acres - Razza - Lighthorse Tavern - Orale - Marco and Pepe (maybe to a lesser extent) - Union Republic (maybe to a lesser extent) - Skinner's Loft (to a lesser extent only because it's not necessarily "creative", but a great comfort food spot)

Saigon was renovated recently and gets more light now. I don't think $12-25 for an entree is too expensive in JC. They also have a great whiskey selection.

Saigon Caf?- Amazing food- Expensive- never got why its not more crowded? But then again I only go once a year or so. Quiet, dark.
Porto- Nice Tapa?s, that?s all I had. Nice layout Liberty House- Best views in JC and the food is really nice. The Point- Not sure if this place is still around, it?s a trip to get there, it?s in Porte Liberty, great view and food. White Star- Nice local Pub food- reasonable. Madam Claude- Love the atmosphere, Pate, hanger steak, etc.. Nice Date night place. Wild Fusion- Comfort Asian Food. I think this is a better take out place. Thanh Hoai- Just great inexpensive Vietnamese food. Can get very crowded GP?s- Great season menu, LOVE this place. Light Horse- Old World Bar that is new. Beautifully place, a little pricey. Park & Sixth- Cool place to have food. Taqueria- Best taco?s anywhere.

I've yet to make it to Thirty Acres, so I didn't want to write it in. They just started their online reservation system, so hoping to try it soon. Also excited for Talde, Battello, and Porta this year. Forgot Razza, another fave!

Thirty Acres and the list really stops there. You've been under a rock if you dont know.
Others to try that weren't mentioned are: Barge Inn - home style American Italian. Honshu - sushi, get the spicy tuna tartar Lamp Post - has surprisingly good bar food - try the chicken francaise sandwich.

I said Hamilton Inn because a) it is nice and b) I don't think their food is all that bad. I am not the NY Times food critic but know what I like. I've enjoyed the ribs, ahi tuna sandwich, and pierogies there. It also helps they are the closest restaurant to our apt! Forgot to add... VB3 (awesome food, kinda weird atmosphere), Azucar (same thing)

Wait; Hamilton Inn has $1 oysters on Wednesday nights? Used to hang out there when it was the Ale House (edit: Maggie's Ale House, not the more recent one) but haven't been back. I will now. I'll also second La Conguita, GP's, Roman Nose, Satis and the others. Don't forget the Light Horse. It's a good stand-by for brunch or dinner and the atmosphere is good. Don't think I've ever had a bad meal there.

One that I don't think gets enough mention is:
Me Casa A good Puerto Rican place over near Dixon Mills. BYOB. My favorites: La Conguita: It's relatively cheap for DTJC, the mussels appetizer is fantastic. Service is slow but friendly. Satis: Everything I've had is great. Skinners: Best burger downtown (IMO), but the entrees can be hit or miss and are expensive. Kraverie: Two words. Kimchi fries Fire and Oak: Really just for the steak, something about it just hits the spot for me. Also the Saturday night lobster special is great. Atmosphere is generic chain and the service is meh. I'll say Hamilton Inn as well. Not because the food is good (only the pub food is even passable), but because of the $1 oysters on wed night. Park & Sixth for the wine and mussels special on Tuesday nights.

GPs
White Star Roman Nose Park & Sixth Gastro Pub Skinner's Loft Casa Dante I can't believe someone said Hamilton Inn, their food is terrible. It seems it's mostly frozen food out of a box. I get that it's a fun bar to hang out in and eat food while drinking, but I don't consider it a restaurant. They should just order in from White Star.

I don't know why I posted this under "real estate." That's what I get for posting from my phone!
Trying it again... My husband and I have fallen into a dining rut whenever we're on this side of the Hudson. We'd love some suggestions for places to try in the area. We're pretty open about trying new foods, so tell me what your favorite JC/Hobo restaurant is and why :) Thanks!
