My tree was in a very bad shape, park and forestry came and cut it. Are they the ones that should pull the roots now?

In Jersey City, you are not allowed to arbitrarily remove a healthy tree that is not on your private property. If the roots are uplifting your sidewalk, you need to remove the concrete, have Parks & Forestry come down & shave the roots, then you replace the concrete.

So this didn't apply to the two beautiful trees on Erie St between 9th and 10th? In earlier posts it was *reported* that the landlord of The Academy Building at 181 Erie had to get the city's approval for the removal.

I can also think of two spots right away here in downtown that could cripple anyone, not even mentioning someone in a walker! I wonder if the homeowners know that they are responsible? In one case someone just drew yellow marker around the raised sidewalk. That has faded during the past few years.

I believe mine was a an ornamental pear tree. It was cut 7 years ago but my sidewalk is still buckled, these roots are decaying slower than politicians..

I'd be fascinated to know what trees are known to buckle sidewalks and what are not. JC has completely blown the recommendations for street tree over a long period. The ornamental pears they put in were terrible, their workers have admitted it to me. They are known for over branching without attentive pruning and then splintering horribly in a storm. The pretty dwarf cherries are a disaster too, they don't grow high enough to clear pedestrians, never mind the trucks that tear off any branch lower than 13 feet.

Then there is the way they send out their numbskull contractors to cut the sidewalk and plant trees without a map of utility lines. They planted a pear years ago right on top of my sewer that leaks. It was one happy tree till it shattered 12 years later.

I rent so was not aware of all the rules.

My friend in Bayonne had a tree that was pushing up the concrete....and it so happened a little old lady tripped. And went after my friend.....the reason was that cause of the cracking he had decided to do a small patch up job on his own.

Turns out all he had to do was call Bayonne City Hall and they would have done the repairs. But he was on the hook, cause that little old lady wanted thousands and a case could be made that it was his attempt at repairs that caused her to trip...not the fact that the root of the trees had pushed up the concrete.

Anyway he was advised by officials that he should wait a few weeks and then apply for a tree removal permit(cost about 36 dollars) and the city would then do all the paving. And this exactly what happened.

Maintaining and/or repairing sidewalks is the responsibility of the homeowner. I am one, and have gotten a citation stating I had to repair mine. Maintaining the sidewalks so that someone using a walker won't be taken out is right alongside shoveling snow, homeowner responsibility.

I maybe wrong...but this falls under the responsibility of the city. You might want to look into that.

Isn't the maintenance and repair of sidewalks also the responsibility of the city?

Hello everyone, can anyone recommend someone who can take out/break tree roots? I need to redo my sidewalk and roots from a tree cut 6 years ago haven't decayed and are still pushing some slabs up. I need this taken care off to even things out.
