Jersey City police chief offers plan to make residents feel safer amid crime concerns

Jersey City officials hosted a town hall-type meeting tonight to discuss steps they plan to take to make residents feel safer, including the implementation of an online police blotter so residents can track arrests and sending police detectives regularly to local community meetings.

Both Mayor Jerramiah Healy and Police Chief Tom Comey have in recent weeks noted that FBI and State Police statistics show crime citywide has fallen since Healy took office in 2004. But tonight Comey said didn?t want to focus on statistics.

?If you don?t believe you?re safe, then we have to make you feel that you?re safe,? Comey said to the crowd of about 125 residents, police officers and public officials assembled inside City Hall.

Healy made similar comments, saying, ?Regardless of the statistics there?s a feeling of much uncomfortability out there.?

As part of the city?s anti-crime effort, some of the 17 officers promoted last week to detective will start checking in at neighborhood association meetings, reporting back to the brass about the groups? concerns, Comey said tonight.

In addition, the city will start distributing ?citizen report forms,? on which residents can relay public-safety concerns to police, anonymously if they wish, he added.

An online blotter is also being planned, to give residents an idea of the number of actual arrests police officers make daily, the chief said.

In the over all city of 250,000+/- people, its totally possible that crime has decreased because in some neighborhoods the only place the rate could go was down. But that's not really a victory.

Victims of crime, the aftermath of crime that is visual and yes, media coverage of actual crimes are responsible for the perception that JC has a rising crime problem

On the home page click on the ?COMPSTAT section? link. It will bring you to a page that has JC reported crime stat?s from 2005 to 2011 by month by district and entire city.

This is how I recall districts break out?North = Heights, South = Greenville, East = Downtown, West = Communipaw/JSq. If you want exact start and end points of districts and things that are in the districts (schools, parks, etc) it is on the main page under ?police locations?.

From looking at the crime stat?s for 2011 I would say each month in the entire city there are around 650 crimes committed. What you see published in the JJ (Journal Jersey) every week is maybe one or two crimes if that. The Mayor should be happy the JJ only lists one or two otherwise the perception would be we are under siege. (is Steven Seagal still working?)

Like I said in other posts don?t go by the few published crime pieces in the JJ (or blogosphere), there is a ton of random crime happening ALL of the time and in EVERY section of JC. Like any other big city you have to ?watch your back and watch your crap?.

And I am not saying the JCPD is not doing a great job.. they are. If you look on some of the older years in the 2005 to 2011 range it also lists monthly arrest stat?s. An example for April 2009?.1040 Adult arrests, 51 Juvenile arrests. (book?em Dano!) Does anyone know the breakout of arrests? I figure it must include some of the crimes in the COMPSTAT list but also domestic fights, driving violations, disorderly conduct, etc.

I'm confused. If crime is down & the city safe, how come the Chief of Police doesn't live here & the mayor & county chief of staph run to the shore every spare minute they have instead of spending glorious fun filled weekends/holidays here? Just asking.

Yes, also when sexual assault becomes "failure to stop at a stop sign" and assault with a deadly weapon because "disorderly conduct," the stats will show that crime is down.

I agree 100% if JJ and JClist did not report crime in the city, the city will be crime free.

Jersey City officials stand by statistics that show decrease in crime

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said at a press conference this morning that there?s a ?disconnect? between
residents who believe crime is on the rise and statistics from the FBI and the State Police that show crime is on the decline.

Asked to explain the disconnect, Healy blamed The Jersey Journal, in part.

?It?s a perception. It comes from your newspaper,? he said. ?It comes from the internet and the blogosphere.?

Police Chief Tom Comey, who the mayor announced this morning will be the city?s interim police director for
the next three months, said the city is planning to hold two ?town hall-type? meetings so the public can relay
their concerns to police officials.
