I got a jar at Sam's Club in Secaucus a while back. They were strong - a little went a long way. Not sure if they still them at Sam's Club, sometimes you find something there and they don't have it the next time you go back.

You can get them canned and dried at A&P. I would use the canned variety, but I'm no expert. Be careful, they are really spicy! So if you were to get the canned kind, I wouldn't dump the whole can in there.

I've found the quality of chipotles, particularly the hard to find preground, to be greatly variable, even from the same vendor. Frustrating as I consider it to be the 3rd "table" condiment after salt & black pepper. Some packages whole ones have been virtually tasteless, but I must say the expensive bottled preground that comes and goes from the spice rack at S-R is pretty good.

Thanks guys. Hmm, I wonder which version would function better in a chili, dried or canned?

All chipotle peppers are smoked. Chipotles are smoked Jalape?os, so you will get the same smoky flavor out of the dried peppers or the canned ones in "adobo".

Actually come to think of it, I once bought the dried ones at Pathmark also.

I'm searching for Chipotle peppers (I guess dried?). I'm planning on making a smoky turkey chili this week. I was in the Tender Shoots farm store yesterday, and they had what appeared to be dried, smoked chilis in little bags, and there were about 5 different varieties, but it was written in just Spanish, so I don't know if it's smoked or not. Can anybody help?

Yup. Shop Rite and A & P has the dried variety.

I use two of them as a bacon/pork substitute when making Cuban black beans. Friends can't tell the difference.

If you don't need the dried ones you can get them canned at any super market. Usually Goya makes them pretty good, but like said before they come canned in a sauce.

You can use the canned chipotles in adobo for smoky chili - it's easy to use and tastes great! If you're looking for dried and smoked jalapenos (I think that's what chipotle is)...you might try ShopRite...their Spanish/Indian aisle has tons of dried peppers.
