They haven't approved the budget yet, so it could be that. Whether or not they vote on it, the budget will be at the heart of the meeting.

Unfortunate scheduling - same time as the next city council meeting.

Hudson hearing March 10 asks the public: How would YOU fix New Jersey?

Monday, March 01, 2010

How can the state improve?

That's the question your elected state politicians want you to answer at a public meeting in Jersey City.

Assembly members Joan Quigley, D-Jersey City, Caridad Rodriguez, D-West New York, Vincent Prieto, D-Secaucus, Ruben Ramos, D-Hoboken, Anthony Chiappone, D-Bayonne, and Charles Mainor, D-Jersey City, announced last week they plan to hold a special meeting to hear directly from Hudson County residents on ways to cut taxes, maintain services and improve the quality of life in New Jersey.

The hearing is slated for 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, in the freeholders' chamber at 567 Pavonia Ave. in Jersey City.

The legislators said in a joint statement that residents and public officials are invited to talk for three minutes each about ideas they have for reducing taxes, maintaining services and improving the quality of life in New Jersey.

The local pols picked up on the idea after the Feb. 2 Assembly Bipartisan Leadership Committee public hearing in Trenton, where about 150 people showed up to talk about their ideas.

Because of the number of participants, the committee that day, which included Quigley, divided into three panels to ensure all attendees could be heard. Their comments were also recorded.

If the crowd is as large in Hudson County, a similar process will be followed.

"The Trenton meeting left everyone with a really good feeling," Quigley said. "That is why I asked my Hudson County colleagues if they would like to try something similar closer to home. They enthusiastically agreed and the freeholders made their chamber available."

There is no advance registration, but attendees will be asked to sign in at the door. Speakers will be heard in the order in which they arrive. Anyone who wishes to bring written remarks or documentation is requested to bring at least eight copies.

For additional information, people are invited to contact the Hudson Assembly members: Mainor (201) 536-7851; Chiappone (201) 436-0473; Prieto (201) 770-1303; Quigley (201) 217-4614; Rodriguez (201) 854-0900; and Ramos (201) 714-4960.
