I believe the rules for how large a deduction you can take have changed... You used to be able to deduct the blue-book value of the donated vehicle, but now the charity has to give a receipt for WHAT THEY ACTUALLY SOLD YOUR CAR FOR, and you can deduct that amount. So your actual cash savings after tax would be roughly a third of that sale value.

Hence, it would be smarter to just sell your car, since even with a minimal amount of effort you should be able to get at least a third of what the charity would be able to get for it... Unless the car is completely unsalable, in which case you should look into scrapping it (free tow, and they'll usually give you $100 for the scrap-metal value).

And even if donating did make financial sense, I *hate* those cars-for-kids ads on the radio (annoying, and get stuck in your head). So boycott that one - there are plenty of other good charities.

I know several people who have donated to Kars For Kids. They're legit and will provide the receipt.

I heard the IRS was cracking down on this scam. Be careful before you take that big deduction for a junker!

I donated my car to the humane society over in liberty state park. They had all the paperwork ready and were very helpful in providing me with all the info I needed to complete the transaction.
