This Robbery Stuff is not cool!! Watch your backs when coming home! Spoke to neighborhood watch peeps and they say its good to hang out outside with your friends -like on your stoop or right in front of your house so theres always a presence and know who your neighbors are so you recognize when someone should not be around. Common sense stuff but doubt people give it much thought.

The door and the lock don't matter, at all, if it's in a crappy, weak, dry rotted wooden frame- You'll come home to a perfectly intact door, with a wonderfully deployed, still in the locked position deadbolt, and a busted door frame.

I replaced the strikeplate on my deadbolt when I switched the locks when I moved in- I was shocked to find that there were screws about 1/3 of an inch long securing it. One swift kick would have busted them right out of the frame with no problem.

Get a screwgun and the longest screws you can find, and sink those badboys as far as you possibly can. It won't be a cure-all, but at least will keep the door from blowing open if some punk leans on it.

Having replaced them, I'm still not 100% confident in the door's ability to hold up, even though it is in good condition. I have been lazy I guess. With the info here I will be re-evaluating the situation as well as activating the existing alarm system in the apartment on my dime.

They didn't break down our door, they just followed someone in after they used their key.

We are fine and nobody in the building was hurt. It's still pretty disturbing, though. I've never been so happy not to live on the first floor and to have a yappy dog.

I'm guessing they'd target either crappy old wooden doors or the modern, hollowed-out variant. I know I was a little concerned about what seemed to be pretty easy access at 511 Manila for anyone with a strong leg and a thick boot.

I posted here a couple weeks back that, apparently, two bike-riding policemen were ringing doorbells on 6th St, checking the sturdiness of outside doors, referencing break-ins in the area. Wasn't sure at the time if they were real cops--still not but it seems more likely now, if this sort of thing's been going on at a higher rate than normal over the summer.

Do we know the type of door this is and the locks used? (does it have a distinctive look / design or door handle type)

If so, check your doors and locks - if they are similar, make some changes or take some precautions.

If the 'thugs' have half a brain, they will be targeting doors and locks that are similar for their ease of forced access.

Yesterday afternoon in Hamilton Park, I met our ex-neighbor from when we rented on Manila and 9th. He said our old apartment (511 Manila) had recently been broken into in the same manner that seems to be the trend around here: the front door (weak wood) kicked in. Right around noon. I wonder if we're talking about one or two groups of thugs.

No, they're too busy trying to get support and make us feel bad for poor lady that runs a convenience store that SELLS CRACK PIPES. Gee, I wonder what the people who robbed her shopped there for previously?

It's time for the citizens to be vigilantes and take the neighborhood back! It's sad, but I think deep down inside, we all know it's true!

is there ever a story of the cops catching any of these guys? the attacks seem to be getting bolder and bolder. someone held up with a gun and push in robberies...unfortunately, someone is probably going to get murdered before the cops finally crack down on sh*t down here.

This is not a new thing, for those in HP we went through this about 5 years ago, the condos at 264-286 9th street , and 263 10th were getting hit hard. A close friend was sleeping when they busted down her metal door with some type of crow bar.
One apt. was broke into on a Saturday afternoon when the person went to run an errand at shop-rite. All of a sudden all the break-ins just stopped. We thought it was someone from the inside , but no-one was ever arrested.
