Captain Al's is no more. He sold the property to a condo developer.

I am glad the Golden Cicada was saved from the illegal land grab... that deserves preservation as did the original Capt Al's Harbor Casino. Those places have more historic value than that old vacant school building.

The HPHA became a paper tiger when they quit the fight to limit the height of the Van Vorst St buildings. Razing this building because of its location will not have any detrimental effect on the aesthetics of the PH neighborhood.

The Paulus Hook Neighborhood Association is even officially called "Historic Paulus Hook Association", so originally at least, historic preservation was important to them.

If they don't go to bat for this, then I can't see they have any shred of that historic mission left.

Robin.

And the reason this monstrosity should stay is why? Because it is old? It is not in highly visible location to the public where it could be the centerpiece of a new green space. Doubtful anyone even notices it as they walk by... and you certainly don't see it driving by on York.

As for the PHNA... where were you when they sold out to support taking down the old factory on Van Vorst and build those towers that fit so well into the neighborhood? They will risk losing their free Annual Pancake Breakfast Cafe donated by Prep. Don't count on them to join your silly preservation fight.

I don't recall the factory having any architectural value. It's an old rectangle brick building with no aesthetic qualities. That's the stuff that should be getting torn down.

Regarding PHNA, isn't that like, their fucking job to save an actual historical building in a historic district? What do these groups even stand for if they won't prevent the demolition of a historic building?

The floors especially the old cafeteria of St. Peter's Grammar school are like hills, I am sure they will meet any demolition requirements once they show pictures.

Most of dtjc was built on marshland. But that church did indeed have structural issues. The building to be domolished though is solid. St. Peter's prep hasnt put a dime into that building since they purchased it many years ago so they can then tell the city to condemn it and tear it down. That building looks like my brownstone in the 70s, which has subsequently been renovated after much blood sweat and tears. St. Peter's prep shouldn't get a pass on their duty to do the same.Quote:

The building is a mess and dangerous... there has been scaffolding up to protect people for months. It was also the place where some homeless guy (also the neighborhood one man crime spree) was squatting much to the surprise of the school. Being on York Street, it won't be missed.

It's been empty for years and God told the Jesuits the land is quite valuable....
