One of the best anti-theft devices is a manual transmission. I read a while back of two car jacking attempts foiled because the thieves couldn't figure out how to drive the car.

I read on the Nextdoor App that there was an attempt on someone else's car on Colgate St. New trend or coincidence?

Thanks jerseymom and bodhipooh for the input about Tile. I'll admit I don't know much about it and assumed it was something akin to the Find My iPhone app. My parents use it on their key rings because they're at that age where they're misplacing a lot of things, especially keys. With keyless ignition systems now standard on cars, replacing a "lost" key is no longer simple or cheap.

I've been in JC 14 years now, and property crime seems to be much worse downtown than I've ever seen it. I think the influx of affluent people with the latest housing boom has made this a target-rich environment. JCPD has warned of a surge in bicycle thefts this past year. Anecdotally, I'm hearing of more people experiencing burglaries and break-ins. Even if you live in a building with a garage, don't assume your car is safe. A lot of thieves will follow cars into garages and even if they're not stealing a car outright, they are breaking into them looking for valuables.

Personally, I think this incident speaks volumes about two things of concern:
- much of DTJC has been lulled into a false sense of security in which people do not expect break-ins, robberies or thefts. In 2016, we had several vehicles left on cinder blocks in the PAD neighborhood, with many other "smash and grab" incidents, some in plain daylight.
- I'm afraid we are witnessing the beginning of an economic downturn based in the recent uptick in petty crime and the increasing number of people showing up at local soup kitchens.

The Tile is useless, unless someone has the app installed on their smartphone AND happens to come into close proximity to it. While the idea is "neat" it is being promoted/advertised in a very obfuscated way that leaves out the reality of its very serious limitations.

sad to hear about your loss, but your comment reminds me of the first time i visited west africa and noticed all the shiny suvs that people were driving around in despite the fact that most people are very poor and there is not much manufacturing to speak of...

Is a carjacking from 6 months ago relevant to this?

Yes, 'cause that's how they manage to get these cars overseas...it's the first step.

Long shots - might try contacting the NJ state police, along with Newark Airport security. Your car could be in a long term lot at the airport. Also, it's in your interest to personally call every local and state org that might have knowledge of your car. Azul might be right - the thieves may have come up with a way to bypass security. Either that - or they've stolen the car for parts.

You might want to read the Amazon reviews on Tile - I don't think this is the best use for Tile. Not sure it works at a considerable distance.

Would you loose your down payment on a theft ? Isn't there a way to insure the loss ?

I think you need to have comprehensive car insurance coverage to be insured for this.

I had purchased with only a handful of payments remaining. The Blue Book value is 4x the amount I owed on it but nevertheless I was looking forward to not having a car payment for a couple of years. I've lived on the block for 10 yrs now and definitely first I've heard of a car being stolen in the neighborhood.

Sorry to hear about your loss, this is unfortunate but not unusual. The car thieves usually live in Newark and do their shopping in downtown JC. Downtown has always been a hot spot due to the turnpike.
