The rumor I heard a couple months back (around the time of that "we're not selling") post was that Hard Grove was going to open in that space.

I guess it's possible the "we're not selling" posts were a bargaining tactic.

Would be good to have SOMETHING open there!

I figure it's worth a shot - anybody have any updates on Monty's? Seems like they have been at a standstill for a long time. I wonder if there is any chance of opening.

It's crazy, I mean it's been 3 years, and what is the rent per month - maybe $3,500 at least? Totally insane.

well i can't see what, if anything, is going on inside the building (though right inside the entry is a pile of broken cement, as if they have no qualms about dumping the busted up sidewalk inside the building). I can mostly only see the sidewalk area.

Exactly. A creative and/or conscientious person would have wanted to save it as a neat touch to add character to an otherwise all-new construction/business. As I stated earlier in this thread, the guy(s) behind this project seem to have more money than brains.

So I'm guessing you don't know the joke about the MTA and Thom McAn.

Hmmm. Nope. Please share?

Has anybody actually been inside Monty's? I am so curious as to what's going on in there. On Facebook it looks like they might be close, but who knows...

They don't say... but here is what it looked liked, as of yesterday. Not sure if the damage was inflicted after the decision to remove it, or if the decision to remove it was due to damage previously present, or if the damage was caused by the rest of the work being done.

It's hard to believe these owners dumped a bunch of money into this property years ago and so far have received absolutely no return. I assume they have no sense of urgency because they simply don't care about or need the money. Must be nice to have so much money.

That's a shame!! Back when I used to live in San Antonio, TX, there was a cool bar (The Davenport?) that had an original Thom McAn sign laid in mosaic on the floor in the entryway. It was really neat walking into the bar and looking at the sign knowing it was from a bygone era.

I can see what's going on from my place. No signage work being done. They are removing the sidewalk (including the cool shoe store logo).

So maybe he isn't trying to sell? Or maybe he wants to finish it and then sell? Either way, construction as been going on since 2013. It's as if they finish one section of the building, take 3 months off, and start on a new section. I wonder what the deal is. Maybe city inspections?

As for Hard Grove Cafe, their Facebook said they were supposed to open last fall. They even had a date for a soft and hard opening. But then whoever owns the lot next door was excavating it and made the hard grove building unsafe. So they canceled their opening and haven't updated their site since. I wonder if there's a legal battle going on between those two properties?

Okay back to work.

You are right! I had completely forgotten about the situation with the lot next door. I now remember that the contractor was excavating the lot and destabilized the new Hard Grove building.

As for Monty's, one must wonder. Two years in and an opening is nowhere in sight. How much longer can someone work on a location without turning a profit? Either the guy has some serious bank, or extreme (foolish?) perseverance. Either way, the fact remains that it's been way too long.

I called it two years ago, in the old Monty's thread (posts #27 and #36 here). What a waste of time, space and hopes.

Hopefully someone with more brains and better planning skills can see this through. A cool bar would make a killing. One need not look any further than Dullboy to know that a well executed bar will do incredibly well in JC.

bill, you are getting the old space confused with the new one. The old space is going to be a bank (PNC if I remember correctly). The new space seems to be stuck in limbo. Not much work seems to be going on there.

Anyone know what's going on with this place? It's been 'coming soon' for a very long time.

And what about the new Hard Grove Cafe? It's hard to tell if they are even working in there.
