What are you talking about? The Taqueria, I thought, was new. I thought they just had that Taco Stand and that's all. You're saying they used to be in the space that they are in now? Huh? If not, then how do you know it hasn't been remodeled? How do you know anything about it when your description of it is in the distant past tense?

We tried the tacos, flautas and enchiladas last night, and all were delicious. We'll definitely be back. And props to Phil and Andrea for stocking Jarrito's orange soda -- my beverage of choice for Mexican food.

According to my Mexican friends, Taqueria (and the old Taco Truck) does indeed serve authentic Mexican food! One of them told me just this morning that they brought some of their (Mexican) friends there over the weekend, and they all raved about the food.
[ Glenn, no philosophical debates on "authentic," please! ] Heck, even if Taqueria's food weren't authentic, I'd still keep patronizing that place. Their food is great, the prices are very low, and the owners are just so darn nice. I, too, hope they do well. Summagold: why don't you give the place a try? You say you've never been there, so you can't really pass judgment.

I've been to Taqueria a few times. It's pretty good. I am glad they got rid of the Hamilton Cafe, that was a total waste of space!
I like to see local restaurants and businesses prosper, I think that Taqueria should so well. I've had the tacos, burritas, and tostadas, all pretty tasty. It's supposedly authentic Mexican, but I'm not Mexican so I can't say for sure. I do know that they don't have nachos, nor do they have fajitas nor guacamole. Oh, and they also deliver. Check them out, the prices are reasonable. Phil is cool!

We've never been to Taqueria but we have some strong reservations against it. I grew up here so I know that place has been around forever. They used to sell and serve pork, maybe even mofongos from the side window. It must have gone through some many different ownerships. All I know is that it has never been remodeled, nor has the stink of the place gone away. We used to commute via the ferry before WTC station reopened and used to pass by it every morning. Whew! Man was the stink coming out of that restaurant/dump revolting! yuck.

I've been to La Gloria and the food was excellent! Real Mexican home cooking. Taqueria sounds a lot like it. Can't wait to check it out.

I'm looking forward to trying this place. But just for the record, there was legit Mexican food in JC already, close to downtown. La Gloria de Mexico in the Heights has a menu full of homespun dishes you can't get at Tex-Mex places. It's at 602 Palisade Ave. at Congress Street. It's right near the cliff -- you can also take the light rail to the 9th/Congress Street stop at the west of 9th Street in Hoboken and take the elevator up. This new place also sounds great, and I'm glad to see it in such a convenient location. I will brave the Curse and try it soon!

1. no fajitas.
2. no nachos. 3. no cute clay or adobe plates to match the cute clay or adobe decor. 4. crema fresca...not sour cream. 5. no tableside guacamole service. in fact, we don't even have guacamole. 6. no fajitas. 7. no fancy menus with a history lesson on mexico. 8. no "mini tacos" or "mini chimis" or anything else "mini". 9. no pillow-size burritos. 10. no tacky red, white, and green uniforms with a red sash around the waist. did we mention no fajitas? there's no substitution for the real thing. thank you for the kind words. phil and andrea

Just went to Taqueria yesterday for the first time with my boyfriend. We loved it! Real Mexican food and the 10 commandments are hilarious! I had beef tacos and the chicken flautas and my boyfriend had the pork tacos and it was excellent!! We loved the picture montage on the wall especially the ones of Eddie Van Halen and White Stripes.
Haha can you spot those next time you're there!?!? It's really authentic and cheap which means I can eat there a few times a week. We think that that corner is cursed though for anything that opens up. We hope these guys make it though. Anytime anyone opens something there it closes within a week eeek! When we first tried to enter Taqueria the door was locked but Andrea and her employee were inside not noticing the door.My boyfriend thought maybe they weren't open yet and were prepping but I was like no way they have to be open. We seriously almost left but then they noticed us outside and opened the door. Cursed I tell you! LOL Don't let Taqueria die!

Here's what I could find:
Quote: Texans would probably like to lay claim to the fajita, but history gives credit to Mexican ranch workers living in West Texas (along the Rio Grande on the Texas-Mexico border) in the late 1930s or early 1940s. When a steer was butchered, the workers were given the least desirable parts to eat for partial payment of their wages. Because of this, the workers learned to make good use of a tough cut of beef known as skirt steak. In Spanish, fajita is a form of the word faja which translates to "belt" or "girdle" in English. I guess you could consider fajitas Tex-Mex. I believe the Taqueria is more focused on actual Mexican (or perhaps Cal-Mex) style recipes.

We received a few menus today. Normally I grumble obscenities, then throw menus out automatically, but this time I'm happy to have their menu. I will definitely be stopping by this week.
Congratulations & good luck to Phil & Andrea!
