What the hell is everyone crying about? The Lamp Post was a dump. It was a dump when Dwayne owned it, but it was cheap and he didn't care what went on there.

The most recent owners, a family from down the block, bought the business with the na?ve fantasy of turning it into a small Italian restaurant. They quickly realized that a place like that pulls in no money, so they immediately jacked up the beer prices and put the place up for sale. It was on the market for almost a year when they abruptly shut down. I'm guessing they finally sold it.

just a note on the music scene - I personally dont want any music here. I come home from working in nyc and want peace and quiet. Thats why many live here instead of nyc. its freakin quiet. I need some sleep, dammit.

I'd love to meet the realtor that sold you on JC being quiet. Sounds like that person could sell sand at the beach.

I think it's obvious that it's all relative. Where I moved from in Manhattan, to where I live now in DTJC.. It's quiet.

+1

Where I live by the water is crickets compared to midtown where I moved from.

Hope a new bar takes over the space. This area doesn't have too much going on but I definitely see plenty of young people walking up Newark Ave after work at night, heading home to the Village.

Dibs on Nicky's brick. The 'Post became our football bar after Pop Merrigan's shut down. They had those trivia game monitors. Two of the patrons, Bozo and Badger, kept the bar near the top in the national trivia foray. The same music scene that had driven us from Lucky 7's sent us packing again. I do enjoy the live tunes as well but a bar can't be both. Good luck on the relocation. See you soon.

While I wasn't a regular customer (in fact, I had not visited in quite some time) I can attest to the friendly atmosphere and camaraderie among the regulars. I first discovered The Lamp Post when I went to watch a dear friend sing. I enjoyed the food, the drinks and the atmosphere. It's a shame the place is closing.

It's a bummer that it will be closing. I hope somebody comes in and re-opens it with a similar neighborhood/dive feel, as opposed to turning it into something cheesy, or an organic bakery.

Wow that's a huge bummer, it will be missed.

And while White Eagle is a very large venue that might not be too great for small local bands, the two restaurants down below White Eagle Hall will both have space for musicians, so I expect you'll be able to see smaller performances there.

The Lamp Post will be closing permanently on January 11th. They'll be having a closing party on Saturday 1/10. From the event's Facebook page:

Quote:
Lamp Post will be closing it's doors January 11th. We have loved getting to know all of you, and watching our neighborhood grow with so many fantastic people. We appreciate all of the love and support that everyone has given us over the years, and we couldn't ask for a better group of people.

January 10th will be our last Saturday, and we want to go out with a bang! We have entertainment starting at 4:30 until last call. There will be LOTS of drink specials, and we invite all of you to come celebrate with us!

We love you, and thank you.

It's a shame that there's one less venue to play in Jersey City now, even if it was the only place where a band could be interrupted by people getting food from the kitchen. While White Eagle will eventually open, it's hard to imagine that they'll be as supportive of local talent as Lamp Post was.
