Inside Forbes: A Great Media Brand Lands in Jersey, With a Terrific Year for a Send Off

Lewis DVorkin Forbes Staff
12/15/2014 @ 10:04AM

Today is the first day of my new FORBES life in Jersey City. I voted for an open office, with a nifty view of the Manhattan skyline (see photo below). As I packed and purged (I only needed two small 18 x 29 x 10-inch plastic containers) for the move from 60 Fifth Ave., I couldn?t help but reflect on a year that brought some of the most significant developments in the history of our legendary media brand. Here are a few:

1. FORBES was sold to a group of Asian investors for an unconfirmed but widely reported valuation of $475 million, much more than the $175 million widely predicted by media and publishing experts.

Thanks! Wow. Considering the once prominent Forbes (who recently auctioned off loads of art, photography at Sotheby's for millions of millions of dollars) it's interesting how they are now moving to Newport, nondescript building of all places. I would have expected them to be in something with more of a story...

unfortunately for forbes, internet happened...

Forbes bids adieu to New York City offices

New York Post
By Keith J. Kelly

Forbes Media is packing up the last of its belonging in Greenwich Village on Friday and moving into new glass tower offices in Jersey City on Dec. 15.

It marks the end of 97 years in New York, including the last 49 at its current townhouse headquarters.

?It?s proceeding smoothly so far and on schedule,? said a spokeswoman.

The company?s new 92,720 square-foot office is expected to house 350 people, which enabled the company and its new Asian ownership team to snag a $27 million Grow New Jersey tax grant.

Forbes committed to 10-year lease in Jersey City

By Joshua Burd - NJBIZ
January 23, 2014 at 2:35 PM

Forbes Media will spend at least 10 years in Jersey City under the terms of its new 93,000-square-foot lease with the LeFrak Organization, the developer said.

Details of the publisher's new headquarters space were made available Thursday, about a week after it announced it would relocate from its longtime home in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. Aided by a $27 million Grow New Jersey tax credit from the state, the company is crossing the Hudson with about new 350 jobs.

Forbes will occupy the entire ninth and 10th floors of 499 Washington Blvd., a 14-story, 600,000-square-foot tower built by LeFrak in 2000, the developer said. The building is in the Newport section of Jersey City, putting the media giant alongside tenants such as UBS and Citibank.

The building remains 100 percent leased as a result of the deal, LeFrak said in a news release. Marylou Berk, senior vice president and head of commercial real estate at LeFrak, and Charles Borrok, executive vice chairman of Cushman & Wakefield, secured the lease on behalf of the landlord.

Forbes is expected to relocate by the end of this year.

Back office workers will be in NJ while executive offices will remain in Manhattan.

I suspect that the 5th Avenue location has appreciated so much they are going to cash in and sell it to a developer.

CEO Mike Perlis gave the word but said the company is looking for ?strategically located office space in Manhattan to serve as a New York office.?
Perlils said the new HQ lease, arranged by the LeFrak Organization, is at 499 Washington Blvd. in Jersey City.

Don't think it will be back offices. Looks like Forbes will be JC based.

I'm not sure how true that is. Many of their executives live in suburban NJ.

Another luxury condo conversion, here we come!! The executives may live in suburban NJ, but they power-lunch in Manhattan. 07310 you are spot on!

I checked out the Forbes musum on 5th ave a week or two ago and the collection is GONE. I had heard they had sold off the Fabrige egg collection ( scandal!) but I hadn't realized they had gone ahead and sold off everything else too. I spoke with a guard, hoping it was all in storage but no, they sold EVERYTHING. All those tin soldiers, the tinplate toy boats, the vintage and in some cases original Monopoly games, the paintngs the jewelry, The Normandie panels, everything. No more Forbes museum.

They sold it a while ago, their lease to stay on ends 12/31, hence the move.

The location of resources is usually split between front office vs back office, not executives vs. non-executive. Back office executives in NJ, Front office executives in NY.

Forbes is a publisher. Guess there may be a client-facing (journalists/sales) versus operations split.

i find it hard to believe that nj would secure a net benefit of $72 billion over 20 years; $72 million sounds more realistic/optimistic
