I'm betting it was made by Epiphone.

I mentioned all these facts in the first post. I posted as a Just in Case and have checked other forums and sites and nothing. I am now thoroughly convinced it was simply meant to be trash.

You're telling the story and suspected it might have been misplaced while unloading / loading - why post a thread about your find in the first place. Not everyone in JC looks to JClist to find your 'misplaced' guitar.

But right next to the garbage cans and other junk which had been left for pick-up. Because the guitar was so out of tune I am convinced that it hadn't been touched in a long time and was meant for the garbage truck or for the first person who found it. I will keep it for my own use. First composition will be a rock opera about fat-ass-bike!

As long as an instrument functions correctly it really does not lose value so why just throw it out?

My take on this is that someone wanted to get rid of the guitar & put it out on trash night hoping that someone would take it. I know I've done that before & 90 percent of the time the item has been taken.

Why not post some flyers up by where you found the guitar? Specifically near the local middle and high schools. A Guitar of that value could be a teens and i'm sure they would love it back.

Put up a few flyers around the block where you found the guitar. There is a good chance the person who may have lost it, or their neighbors/friends will be returning to that area. if they can ID it, it's theirs. Or someone may even reply that it was put out for trash and thus free for the taking.

This should be on mythbusters !
The cops keep a register of lost and found. The finder gets a receipt of that number and if anyone calls about a specific item, they check the register. After a length of time, the register is checked and all things remaining go to the finder - legally If a person finds their item at the cops, their details are recorded so the 'finder' can be confident a cop 'hasn't' taken it home. As for the cop responding, "Sir, I have no idea." it makes sense; the same cop doesn't sit there all day and everyday, but then again JC does have some dumb-ass cops that are not familiar of what the protocols are or simply to lazy to check the lost and found register.

I just called my local precinct's front desk and asked if anybody had come in or called looking for a lost guitar. The reply was "Sir, I have no idea." (click)

Going to the police is a huge waste of time. It will end up in a room, in the corner and sit there forever or eventually get taken home by someone.
go to face book, swap sell jersey city group an dpost about it there. And I agree that posting to JC list will get you a lot further than dropping by the police dept.

Having integrity is a great character trait.
If you're serious about knowing if a careless mistake and not trash, you would hand it in to the police. With most lost items, its often the first place people call to see if a lost item has been handed in, and not a forum on JClist. We could speculate that it belongs to a kid that learns guitar at school ! What about doing a letter drop in that area / block, giving residents there an opportunity to call you by saying you have it ?

If you know the make and the location where it was lost then PM me. I would guess that if it wasn't lost then it was put out by someone who didn't understand it's value and just wanted it gone. Book value is between $200-$300 after checking several sites. If it was lost then I'd like it to go back to it's owner.

So if I came to you with a matching serial number and model for the instrument it'd still be yours? I'd turn it over to the police. Guitars + cases can range anywhere from $200 to $4000.

It's already mine legally. Besides, if it was just garbage why risk having a cop pilfer it away?

What about taking it to the cops - If not claimed within a specific time, the item becomes legally yours

I found a guitar tonight. Perfectly good and still in case. It was near curbside garbage but was leaning against a pole where it might have been misplaced while unloading/loading a car. If you lost it and can identify type and place then please PM me.
